Essen-Werden Station
Essen-Werden is a railway station in the city of Essen in western Germany. It serves the southern city borough Werden and is situated on the bank of the river Ruhr at the junction of the Ruhr Valley Railway and the line to Essen. The station was opened in 1872 as part of the Düsseldorf-Werden-Kupferdreh line of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn. In 1877, a line to Essen opened. Passenger services on the line to Kupferdreh closed on 29 May 1965. The station today sees regular service by Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn trains on the S6 line since 1974. Werden is a southern borough of the city of Essen in Germany. It belongs to the city district ''IX Werden/Kettwig/Bredeney'' and has 9,998 inhabitants as of June 30, 2006. Ruhr Valley Railway
The Ruhr Valley Railway (german: Ruhrtalbahn) is a partly abandoned railway line in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, running from Düsseldorf-Rath via Old Kupferdreh station, Bochum-Dahlhausen, Witten-Herbede, Hagen-Vorhalle and Schwerte to Warburg. It was built between 1872 and 1876 by the Bergisch-Märkische Railway Company (''Bergisch-Märkischen Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft''), one of the three major private railway companies in the Ruhr area. The Essen-Werden to Essen railway is an electrified railway line in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a main line railway with two tracks, except for the ''Stadtwald Tunnel'', running through the metropolitan area of Essen and connecting Essen-Werden station with Essen Hauptbahnhof. Description and history The source of the Ruhr is near the town of Winterberg in the mountainous Sauerland region, at an elevation of approximately . The Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn (german: S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr) is a polycentric and electrically driven S-train network covering the Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Region in the German federated state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
