Eskaton
Eskaton is a defunct Vanity label, vanity record label created by Coil (band), Coil, exclusively for albums put out by the group and their friends. Its brother labels are Threshold House and Chalice (record label), Chalice. The record label is often associated with the symbol of the "Chaos Cross" and the "Twisted Chaos Cross", symbols which have appeared on several Eskaton releases, such as ''Gold Is The Metal with the Broadest Shoulders''. Releases Chaos Cross The Symbol of Chaos, symbol of the chaos cross was used almost exclusively in the times of Coil's side projects. It is a dominant symbol which can be found on a number of releases and merchandise. Coil (band)
Coil were an English experimental music group formed in 1982 in London and dissolved in 2005. Initially envisioned as a solo project by musician John Balance (of the band Psychic TV), Coil evolved into a full-time project with the addition of his partner and Psychic TV bandmate Peter Christopherson, formerly of pioneering industrial music group Throbbing Gristle. Coil's work explored themes related to the occult, sexuality, alchemy, and drugs while influencing genres such as gothic rock, neofolk and dark ambient. AllMusic called the group "one of the most beloved, mythologized groups to emerge from the British post-industrial music, post-industrial scene." ''Nasa-Arab'' is a 12" single by Coil vs. The Eskaton. The Eskaton, however, is another alias of Coil. Eskaton is also the name of a record label that was run by Coil. Background The song "Nasa-Arab" originally appeared in a shorter form on the album ''Stolen & Contaminated Songs''. "First Dark Ride" would later appear on ''Unnatural History III''. Mount Vernon Arts Lab is a musical project of the Scottish musician Drew Mulholland, who has also recorded as Black Noise and N. Between 1996 and 2001, a string of EPs, singles, and albums were released. After this he continued to release material as Mount Vernon Astral Temple. Threshold House
Threshold House is one of several record labels created by Coil to release their own work and that of affiliated projects. Associated labels include Eskaton and Chalice. It is also the name for the official Coil website. The label was initially a vanity label of sorts, as all releases were manufactured and distributed by other labels, most prominently World Serpent Distribution. Following the bankruptcy of World Serpent, the label continued independently. The logo for Threshold House is a castle-like building, possibly what Coil have referred to as "The East Tower" in past interviews, and a moon. It is also very similar to artist recreations of the buildings at Catalhoyuk. A Thousand Lights In A Darkened Room
''A Thousand Lights in a Darkened Room'' is the only release by Black Light District, an alias for English experimental group Coil. The alias was one of a few assumed by them in the mid-nineties for releasing purely experimental music. Background "Unprepared Piano" is a reference to the prepared piano technique created by John Cage, of whom Coil are said to be fond. "Blue Rats" was later remixed and released on the compilation ''Foxtrot'', credited to Coil. An alternate version of "London's Lost Rivers" appears on ''Unnatural History III'' as "Lost Rivers of London". The vinyl version was limited to a pressing of 2,000 numbered copies. However, there are duplicate numbers and three colors: blue, white, and clear. The CD has a catalogue number of ESKATON 008 and the vinyl set has a catalogue number of Eskaton 009. Thighpaulsandra
Timothy Lewis – best known by the stage name Thighpaulsandra – is a Welsh experimental musician and multi-instrumentalist, known mostly for performing on synthesizers and keyboards. He began his career working with Julian Cope in the late 1980s, becoming a member of Cope's touring band. A collaboration with Cope in 1993 followed, forming the experimental duo Queen Elizabeth. In 1997, former Cope guitarist Mike Mooney invited Thighpaulsandra to fill in for the departing Kate Radley on a Spiritualized tour, and he remained with the band until early 2008. In 1998, Lewis also became a member of the experimental band Coil. He has subsequently released several solo albums under the Thighpaulsandra moniker. Lewis currently performs and records as part of URUK with Massimo Pupillo (of Italian band Zu) and UUUU, a band also featuring Valentina Magaletti and Wire members Graham Lewis and Matthew Simms. Coil Presents Time Machines
''Coil Presents Time Machines'' was a live CD by Coil. This CD was produced in a limited amount of 1,000 copies and was given away with the initial mail orders of ''Musick to Play in the Dark Vol. 2''. The CD is a live performance which took place on 2 April 2000 at the Cornucopia festival in the Royal Festival Hall in London, England. The name of the performance was "Time Machines from the Heart of Darkness". The album was later reissued as "CD A" on '' Live One'' in an unaltered form. Release "Everything Keeps Dissolving" and "Chasms" appear on "CD B" of '' Live One'' as well. However, "Chasms" is titled "Blue Chasms". Neither of these songs have had a proper studio release. The lyrics for "Chasms" are "every man and woman is a star", a phrase coined by Aleister Crowley. "Circulating" is a shortened live version of '' Queens of the Circulating Library''. ''Born Again Pagans'' is an extended play attributed to Coil vs. ELpH. "ELpH" is a name Coil attributed to a spiritual entity they felt was communicating with them during recording. Background In the CD booklet track one is attributed to Coil and tracks two, three and four are attributed to ELpH. "Protection" is supposed to be the single for the "forthcoming double CD compilation the ''Sound of Music''" due "Spring 1995". However the ''Sound of Music'', a proposed compilation of Coil's soundtrack work, was never released. Recreated versions of the song "Protection" were released as "Simenon" and "Bee Has the Photos" on the '' Backwards'' demo. Three official alternate versions of the song "Protection" have also surfaced as bootlegs. Their track timings are: 13:26, 4:36, and 6:28. "Glimpse" is a version of "pHILM #1". ''Moon's Milk (In Four Phases)'' is a release by Coil that compiles four of their singles onto a double CD. The two disc album compiles the CD versions of '' Spring Equinox'', ''Summer Solstice'', ''Autumn Equinox'' and ''Winter Solstice'' (originally recorded throughout 1998, and released seasonally from March 1998 to January 1999). The album also has a live version of "Amethyst Deceivers" hidden at the end of the first disc, following several minutes of silence after "A Warning From The Sun (For Fritz)". This recording of "Amethyst Deceivers" was later released on ''Live Two'', although the Moon's Milk version is a slightly longer edit. Time Machines
''Time Machines'' is a 1998 studio album by English experimental group Coil, originally released under the one-off project alias Time Machines. The album was created under the premise of psychedelic drone pieces named after corresponding hallucinogenic drugs, "tested and retested" during the album's studio sessions for apparent narcotic potency. Main member John Balance also described the album as an attempt to create "temporal slips". Background and composition ''Time Machines'' is composed of four electronic drone pieces created with modular synthesizers, which as hinted at in their track names are an attempt to recreate the chemically derived psychedelic and narcotic potency of telepathine, DOET, DMT and psilocybin mushrooms (telepathine and DMT being primary components of ayahuasca).
