Esbjerg Art Museum
The Esbjerg Art Museum ( da, Esbjerg Kunstmuseum) is an independently owned art museum in Esbjerg in southwest Jutland, Denmark. Founded in 1910, in 1962 it moved into a new building in the City Park designed by Jytte og Ove Tapdrup. Since 1997, the museum has formed part of a complex which also contains the Esbjerg Performing Arts Centre. History Founded as ''Esbjerg Kunstforening'' (Esberg's Art Association) in 1910, the museum was first located in the public library (''Esbjerg Bibliotek'') in 1927. In 1930, it purchased works by modernists such as Harald Giersing, Edvard Weie and Vilhelm Lundstrøm. After moving into the new building in the City Park in 1962, the museum acquired concrete works by Richard Mortensen and Robert Jacobsen as well as works from artists participating in the Linien and Linien II associations. Ernest Mancoba
Ernest (Methuen) Mancoba (29 August 1904 – 25 October 2002) was an avant-garde artist, born in Transvaal Colony, who spent the majority of his life in Europe. He was probably South Africa's first professional Black modern artist, and exhibited from the late 1920s onward. Biography Early life Ernest Methuen Mancoba was born in Turffontein, Johannesburg, Transvaal Colony on 29 August 1904. Born the son of a miner, Mancoba grew up on the Rand and was eventually sent to Grace Dieu near Pietersburg for his secondary schooling by his uncle, an Anglican minister. After graduating, he was hired at Grace Dieu as a language teacher in 1924. Olafur Eliasson
Olafur Eliasson ( is, Ólafur ElÃasson; born 5 February 1967) is an Icelandic–Danish artist known for sculptured and large-scale installation art employing elemental materials such as light, water, and air temperature to enhance the viewer's experience. In 1995 he established Studio Olafur Eliasson in Berlin, a laboratory for spatial research. In 2014, Eliasson and his long-time collaborator, German architect Sebastian Behmann founded Studio Other Spaces, an office for architecture and art. Per Bak Jensen (born 22 April 1949) is a Danish landscape photographer. His desolate images of nature or industrial sites often convey an almost metaphysical impression. His unusual subjects include corn stubble, twigs in the snow or a few isolated rocks. Always attentive to angle, light and exposure, he never manipulates his photographs once they have been taken. Michael Kvium
Michael Otto Albert Kvium (born 15 November 1955) is a Danish artist. He has excelled in a number of fields such as painting, illustrating, sculpting and various performing arts, performance genres. Since the early 1980s, he has created grotesque realistic works, depicting the darker side of life. Biography Born in Horsens in the east of Jutland, Kvium studied painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Albert Mertz and Stig Brøgger. His paintings and graphic works often resemble comic strip art or extensions of 17th-century Baroque paintings. They depict the more negative aspects of Western culture. Christian Lemmerz
Christian Lemmerz (born January 30, 1959) is a German-Danish Sculpture, sculptor and Visual arts, visual artist who attended the Accademia di Belle Arti in Carrara, Italy, from 1978 to 1982 and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1983 to 1988. Despite classical sculpture training in Carrara, Lemmerz drew his main inspiration from the post-war process-oriented pop art, not least from his fellow countryman, Joseph Beuys. In the early 1980s Lemmerz was part of the Danish artist collective ''Værkstedet Værst'' and the performance group ''Performancegruppen Værst''. He conducted numerous performances there from 1985 to 1994, many of these alongside lifelong friend and artist Michael Kvium. Thomas Bang (born 6 September 1938) is a Danish sculptor who in the 1970s contributed to Conceptual art and Pop art in the United States. Biography Born in Copenhagen, as a young man Bang became interested in Surrealism as practised by Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst and Yves Tanguy. After he moved to the United States with his parents, he studied art at the University of Cincinnati (1958–59), the Cleveland Institute of Art (1959–61), Yale University (1961–62), and the University of Southern California (1962–64).
