Erskine Street Police Station
Erskine Street Police Station is a heritage-listed former police station at 82 Erskine Street, Sydney, City of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was designed by William Dumaresq and built in 1827. It is also known as the Erskine Street Watch House. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History Close to Darling Harbour, Erskine Street developed initially during the early decades of the nineteenth century as residential and mercantile, servicing the trading character of the Harbour. Its proximity to an area considered by authorities to be potentially dangerous, frequented as it was by convicts, sailors and labourers, encouraged the city to locate a watch-house within the residential group. The watch-house at No. 82, built in 1827 and still operating until recently became closely linked with this row of houses. William Dumaresq
William John Dumaresq (25 February 1793 – 9 November 1868) was an English-born military officer, civil engineer, landholder and early Australian politician. He is associated with settler colonisation of the areas around Scone and Armidale, in New South Wales. Life and career Dumaresq was the son of John Dumaresq, a Shropshire colonel, and Anne Jones. He attended the Royal Military College, Great Marlow, and became a civil engineer. He served in the Royal Staff Corps in the Peninsular War and in Canada. He rose to the rank of Captain. Although some sources say that he worked on the Ottawa canal, that seems unlikely, as the canal was built after Dumaresq arrived in Australia. However, he possibly worked on associated canals in Canada, which began construction earlier, such as the Greville Canal. The New South Wales State Heritage Register, also known as NSW State Heritage Register, is a heritage list of places in the state of New South Wales, Australia, that are protected by New South Wales legislation, generally covered by the Heritage Act 1977 and its 2010 amendments. The register is administered by the Heritage Council of NSW via Heritage NSW, a division of the Government of New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment. Darling Harbour
Darling Harbour is a harbour adjacent to the city centre of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia that is made up of a large recreational and pedestrian precinct that is situated on western outskirts of the Sydney central business district. Originally named Long Cove, the locality extends northwards from Chinatown, along both sides of Cockle Bay to King Street Wharf on the east, and to the suburb of Pyrmont on the west.
