Errol Tobias
Errol George Tobias (born 18 March 1950) is a former South African rugby union footballer, and the first player of colour to play in a test match for the South African national side. He gained six caps between 1981 and 1984 when the country was still following the policy of apartheid. Tobias's selection paved the way for other black players to be added to the national team: first Avril Williams, and later, Avril's nephew, Chester Williams. Of his 21 games for the Springboks, six were tests. Early life and rugby career Errol Tobias was born on the farm Klipdrift, located outside Caledon in the Overberg district of the Western Cape. Caledon, Western Cape
Caledon is a town in the Overberg region in the Western Cape province of South Africa, located about east of Cape Town next to mineral-rich hot springs. it had a population of 13,020. It is located in, and the seat of, the Theewaterskloof Local Municipality. John Noble (rugby Union)
John Noble is a former South African rugby union player and one of four players of colour to be included in the first multi-racial team to play a foreign team on South African soil in 1975. Noble also represented the South African Rugby Football Federation and its representative side, the Proteas. Noble was selected by Danie Craven for the South African Invitation XV to play a touring French national side. Solomon Mhlaba
Solomon Mhlaba is a former rugby union fullback, one of only four players of colour, and one of two black African players, to be selected for South African sides during the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1978, Mhlaba was invited to attend the Springbok training camp. He was selected for the South African Barbarians twice, touring with the team in Britain in 1979. In 1980 he played against the touring Lions team twice, once with the Barbarians, and once as member of the South African Country Districts XV. He accompanied mining teams on local and overseas trips. In 1992, he qualified as a referee with the Southeastern Transvaal Referees' Association while working for SASOL at Secunda. Charles Williams (rugby Union)
Charles Williams is a former South African rugby union player who represented the Proteas against the All Blacks (1976). He was also selected in 1979 for the South African Barbarians, the first multi-racial South African side to tour Britain. On 4 June 1980 he was in the South African Country Districts XV team that lost 7-27 at South-West Stadium to the Lions on their tour of South Africa. Although selected as a replacement, Williams was brought on and scored the District's sole try. The Lions' team included Clive Woodward Sir Clive Ronald Woodward (born 6 January 1956) is an English former rugby union player and coach. Hugo Porta
Hugo Porta (born 11 September 1951) is a former Argentine Rugby Union footballer, an inductee of both the International Rugby Hall of Fame and IRB Hall of Fame, and one of the best fly-halves the sport has seen. During the 1970s and 1980s, he played 58 times for ''Los Pumas'', captaining them on 34 occasions, including leading them during the first World Cup in 1987. Porta made his international debut in 1971. His best performances came in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with 1977 draw with France, the Pumas' 1979 24–13 win against Australia, and a 21–21 tie with the All Blacks on 2 November 1985. The Kings Park Stadium (known as the Hollywoodbets Kings Park for sponsorship reasons since 2022), is a stadium located in the Kings Park Sporting Precinct in Durban, South Africa. The British & Irish Lions is a rugby union team selected from players eligible for the national teams of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The Lions are a test side and most often select players who have already played for their national team, although they can pick uncapped players who are eligible for any of the four unions. The team currently tours every four years, with these rotating between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in order. John Hamilton "Chick" Henderson (9 February 1930 – 21 November 2006) was a South African rugby union footballer and commentator. A native of Johannesburg, Henderson was educated at Michaelhouse, the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Oxford. He played rugby for the Transvaal and Scotland and later became nationally known as a radio and subsequently television commentator. South African Barbarians
South African Barbarians is an invitational rugby union club styled along the lines of Barbarian F.C. It was formed in 1960 by Frank Mellish, the former 1951–52 Springbok selector and manager, together with former Natal Rugby Union President, Harry Stacey. The club is directly affiliated to the South African Rugby Union. Club colours and emblem The club's colours are a light and dark blue quartered jersey with white shorts. Goodwood, Cape Town
Goodwood is a suburb of Cape Town in the Western Cape, South Africa and is situated in the Tygerberg region of the City of Cape Town. It is 10 kilometres from Cape Town and accessible from the N1, N7 and N2 highways.
