Ernie Jones (Australian Sportsman)
Ernest Jones (30 September 1869 – 23 November 1943) was an Australian sportsman, playing Test cricket and Australian rules football. Jones played 19 Tests from 1894 to 1902 and represented Port Adelaide, North Adelaide and South Adelaide Football Clubs. Nicknamed ''Jonah'', Jones was one of the best and fastest bowlers of his time, initially erratic but subsequently gaining control of line and length to good effect. Jones worked as a customs officer, and one of his claims to fame as a cricketer was that he was known as 'The man who bowled a ball through W. G. Grace's Beard' and was reputed to have broken Stanley Jackson's ribs. His action was controversial and complained about in both England (in 1896) and Australia. Ernest Lee Jones (born December 15, 1964) is a former American professional football player who was a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) and the World League of American Football (WLAF). He played for the Phoenix Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL, and the Amsterdam Admirals of the WLAF. Jones played collegiately at Indiana University. Ernest Jones (born January 3, 1953) is a former professional American football defensive back who played in four NFL seasons from 1976 to 1979 for the Seattle Seahawks and the New York Giants. He was drafted by the Seahawks in the 5th round of the 1976 NFL Draft after playing college football for the Miami Hurricanes. After playing mostly as a backup cornerback for the Seahawks in 1976, the Seahawks moved him to free safety during the 1977 preseason, but he was waived before the start of the 1977 season and signed by the Giants. Jones was waived by the Giants during the 1980 preseason and was not picked up by any other team, ending his pro football career. Giants' head coach Ray Perkins said of waiving Jones that Jones could no longer play "at a level of winning football" due to a foot injury he suffered during the 1979 season and added that "I recommended he retire. William Ernest Arthur Jones (12 November 1920 – 2002) was a professional footballer who played for Swansea Town, Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton, Bristol City, Rhyl and represented Wales at national level. Football career Jones was born in Cwmbwrla and began his football career as an amateur at Bolton Wanderers before joining Swansea Town in October 1943. He made 37 appearances and scored three times for the club in the 1946–47 season. The free scoring winger transferred to Tottenham Hotspur in October 1947 for a £7000 fee. He went on to appear in 57 matches and found the net on 16 occasions in all competitions between 1947 and 1948. He left Spurs in May 1949 to join Southampton in a transfer deal which involved Alf Ramsey, where he featured in 44 games and scoring on four occasions. Ernest Thomas Jones (22 September 1932 – 31 December 2019) was an Irish professional golfer. He won the Irish PGA Championship twice and represented Ireland in the 1965 Canada Cup. His biggest individual successes came in the 1961 Cox Moore Tournament and, as a senior, in the 1984 Trusthouse Forte PGA Seniors Championship. Golf career Jones won the Irish PGA Championship in 1955 and 1964. He also won the 1959 Hennessy Tournament. Outside Ireland, Jones was a surprise winner of the 1961 Cox Moore Tournament with an impressive score of 270, two strokes ahead of Peter Alliss, taking the first prize of £1,000. Ernest William Jones (October 6, 1910 – May 15, 2005) was a Canadian politician. He was an alderman on Ottawa City Council from 1950 to 1952, and was a member of the Ottawa Board of Control from 1955 to 1960 and from 1963 to 1974. He unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Ottawa in 1960, and was Deputy Mayor of the city in 1972. Known for living his life "fast and aggressive", he was a believer in "grass-roots contact with the electorate", his electoral base was the small businessman and the suburban homeowner, whose main concern he stated was "careful spending of their tax buck... When taxes go up, they want to know exactly why". He presided over the city's recreation and parks department during its infancy, and helped obtain an agreement with the Ottawa Board of Education for sharing playgrounds and other recreational facilities.
