Ernest Samuel Marks
Ernest Samuel Marks CBE (7 July 1872 – 2 December 1947) was an Australian sporting administrator and politician. He was born at West Maitland to Wool broker Joseph Marks and Elizabeth, ''née'' Benjamin and attended Royston College in Sydney before becoming a wool trader and becoming involved in the running of the family business, Joseph Marks & Co. Politics Marks served as the Nationalist member for North Sydney in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1927 to 1930. He had also been active in local government through the Civic Reform Association, serving on Sydney City Council from 1920 to 1927 and from 1930 to 1947, with a period as Lord Mayor in 1930. Sport In 1888–90 Marks won more than forty trophies as an athlete. HNLMS ''Java'' ( nl, Hr.Ms. Java) was a of the Royal Netherlands Navy. She was sunk during the Battle of the Java Sea on 27 February 1942. Service history The ship was built by the Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, ''Koninklijke Maatschappij de Schelde'' in Flushing and laid down on 31 May 1916. The ship was launched on 6 August 1921, and commissioned on 1 May 1925. Later that year on 14 October ''Java'' left the Netherlands for a journey to the Dutch East Indies. She arrived in Tanjung Priok on 7 December that year. On 29 July 1929 ''Java'', the destroyers and , and the submarines and left Surabaya and steamed to Tanjung Priok. Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) is the Commonwealth Games Association for Australia, and is responsible for representing and promoting the Commonwealth Sport movement in the country, and organises the participation of athletes at the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games. Joseph Jackson (Australian Politician)
Joseph Jackson (26 November 1874 – 23 August 1961) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1922 until 1956. He was variously a Nationalist, United Australia Party, Independent and Liberal member of parliament . Early life and career Jackson was born in Wellington, New South Wales and educated to elementary level in rural state schools. His father was an alluvial gold prospector and Jackson worked in rural occupations until he founded a substantial retail business at the Peak Hill gold rush after 1889. He moved to Sydney in 1904 and established a chain of retail stores. Jackson purchased Faulconbridge, the home of Sir Henry Parkes and donated a large tract of land (Jackson Park) to form a Prime Ministers' Corridor of Oaks. Gordon Bennett (Australian Soldier)
Lieutenant General Henry Gordon Bennett, (15 April 1887 – 1 August 1962) was a senior Australian Army officer who served in both World War I and World War II. Despite highly decorated achievements during World War I, during which he commanded at both battalion and brigade level and became the youngest general in the Australian Army, Bennett is best remembered for his role in the Battle of Singapore in February 1942 in the Pacific War. As commander of the 8th Australian Division, he escaped while his men became prisoners of the Imperial Japanese Army. After this, Bennett's military career waned and, although he rose to command a corps, he never again commanded troops in battle. In 1945, his escape caused controversy and resulted in a Royal Commission and military enquiry. Both found that he had been unjustified in relinquishing his command. Ben Howe (politician)
Benjamin Howe (21 March 1892 – 14 February 1950) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1930 until 1932, representing the electorate of North Sydney. Howe was born in Darlinghurst, and undertook an apprenticeship as an engineer at Mort's Dock. He became a fitter and turner in the tramway workshops at Randwick from 1921 until his election to parliament in 1930. He was an active trade unionist, serving as a shop delegate, organiser and representative of the tramway section of the Amalgamated Engineering Union. He also ran a soup kitchen with his wife in North Sydney during the Great Depression. Howe was the Labor candidate for North Sydney at the 1927 state election, losing to Ernest Marks, and for the corresponding federal seat at the 1928 federal election, losing to former Prime Minister Billy Hughes. Australian Jewish Historical Society
The Australian Jewish Historical Society was founded in 1938 in Sydney. The first president was Percy J. Marks. At the first business meeting of the Society, the then-president of the Royal Australian Historical Society K. R. Cramp expressed the view that the chief object of the Society should be the encouragement of individual research. In 1939, the Society published the first issue of the ''Australian Jewish Historical Society Journal'' (initially known as the ''Australian Jewish Historical Society, Journal and Proceedings''). In 1949, a Melbourne branch was established, which was informally known as AJHS (Vic). This branch grew and eventually incorporated. There is no national executive, with the Sydney and Melbourne Societies being financially independent. Great Synagogue (Sydney)
The Great Synagogue is an Orthodox Jewish congregation located in a large heritage-listed synagogue at 187a Elizabeth Street in the Sydney central business district, in the City of Sydney local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The congregation is the oldest in the Sydney Jewish community, and comprises around 550 families. There are services every day of the week with the exception of Sunday. The service is Orthodox and traditional, with a professional choir singing on Shabbat and Festival mornings and at some evening services. The synagogue runs adult education classes, a bar and bat mitzvah program, a course for those who wish to convert to Judaism and provides pastoral care to its members.
