Ernest Roberts (Labour Politician)
Ernest Alfred Cecil Roberts (20 April 1912 – 28 August 1994) was a Labour Party politician. He worked for the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers, was a co-founder of the Anti-Nazi League in 1977 and was the MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington from 1979 to 1987. Early life Roberts left primary school in Shrewsbury at the age of thirteen, having declined a scholarship to the Shrewsbury School of Art, to work in a coal mine to help support ultimately ten siblings. He worked as an engineering worker for many years, much blacklisted and dismissed for trade union activities, until he became Assistant General Secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers in 1957. Ideologically, he was on the left-wing of the Labour Party. Diane Abbott
Diane Julie Abbott (born 27 September 1953) is a British politician who has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987. A member of the Labour Party, she served in the Shadow Cabinet of Jeremy Corbyn as Shadow Home Secretary from 2016 to 2020. Abbott was the first black woman elected to Parliament, and is the longest-serving black MP in the House of Commons. Born in Paddington, to a British-Jamaican family, Abbott attended Harrow County School for Girls before going to read History at Newnham College, Cambridge. Hackney North and Stoke Newington is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom since 1987 by Diane Abbott of the Labour Party, who served as Shadow Home Secretary from 6 October 2016 to 5 April 2020. Abbott was one of the first three Black British MPs elected, and the first female Black British MP in the UK. David Weitzman
David Weitzman, QC (18 June 1898 – 6 May 1987) was a British Labour Party politician. Weitzman was born in Blackburn and educated at Hutchesons' Grammar School, Glasgow, Manchester Central School and Manchester University. He served in the Manchester Regiment in the First World War. After graduating he was called to the Bar (Gray's Inn) and became a member of the Northern Circuit. He contested Stoke Newington unsuccessfully at the 1935 general election but it was a Labour gain at the 1945 general election. In October 1947, he was convicted of conspiracy related to unlawful supply of toilet preparations (lipstick) by his brothers' Newington Supply Co. contrary to wartime regulations, and was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and fined £500. This was quashed in March 1948. For the 1950 election his seat was reconstituted as Hackney North and Stoke Newington and he went on to represent the constituency for a further 29 years. Cecil Hallett
Cecil Walter Hallett (10 December 1899 – 5 December 1994) was a British people, British trade unionist. Born in London, Hallett left school aged fourteen. He worked as a messenger before securing an apprenticeship as a fitter and turner in Beckton. In 1918, he enlisted in the 10th (County of London) Battalion (Hackney), London Regiment, 10th London Regiment, but with World War I about to finish, he was discharged the following year. He returned to employment as a fitter and turner, and became active in the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU). In 1948, he was elected as the union's assistant general secretary, then in 1957 as its general secretary, serving until his retirement in 1964.
