Ernest Horspool
Ernest Horspool (23 August 1891 – 21 June 1957) was a New Zealand cricketer. He played first-class cricket for Auckland between 1909 and 1929, and represented New Zealand in the period before New Zealand played Test cricket. Cricket career Horspool was a middle-order or opening batsman. He made his first first-class century in 1913-14 in Auckland's victory over Wellington, scoring 54 and 113 in a match in which nobody else reached 50. He played in the first of the two matches New Zealand played against the touring Australians later that season but was unsuccessful, and was one of seven in the New Zealand team who lost their places for the second match. He made his second century against the touring Victorian team 11 years later in 1924-25, when he scored 143 in three hours and added 212 for the second wicket with Nessie Snedden. Dargaville
Dargaville ( mi, Takiwira) is a town located in the North Island of New Zealand. It is situated on the bank of the Northern Wairoa River in the Kaipara District of the Northland region. The town is located 55 kilometres southwest of Whangārei. Dargaville is 174 kilometres north of Auckland. It is noted for the high proportion of residents of Croatian descent. Victoria Cricket Team
The Victoria men’s cricket team is an Australian first-class men's cricket team based in Melbourne, Victoria. The men’s team, which first played in 1851, represents the state of Victoria in the Marsh Sheffield Shield first-class competition and the Marsh One Day Cup 50-over competition. Grafton United Cricket Club
Grafton United Cricket Club is one of New Zealand's oldest and largest cricket clubs, catering for around 700 senior members and 600 juniors (as of October 2017) from its clubrooms at Victoria Park, in central Auckland. The club was founded as the United Cricket Club, on 18 September 1862 by players from existing Auckland clubs and was often referred to as 'the United' because of this. The club aimed to acquire more regular and more challenging competition than that which was on offer in Auckland at the time. The club's first ground was a field in Newmarket donated by local farmer, James Dilworth, but its distance from the city prompted the administration, on behalf of the cricketers of Auckland, to apply for the use of the Auckland Domain and it began practicing and playing there in 1863. Nessie Snedden
Andrew Nesbit Colin "Nessie" Snedden (3 April 1892 – 27 September 1968) was a New Zealand cricketer. He played first-class cricket for Auckland between 1909 and 1928, and captained New Zealand in the days before New Zealand played Test cricket. Cricket career At the time of his first-class debut at the age of 17 in December 1909, Snedden was the youngest player to represent Auckland. His highest first-class score was 139, which he made when captaining Auckland against Hawke's Bay in 1920–21; in the same match he also took 5 for 13 (his best bowling figures) and 2 for 21, and Auckland won by an innings and 354 runs. He scored his other first-class century against Otago in 1925–26, when Auckland needed 271 for victory and he scored 131 not out, making the winning hit with a four to take Auckland to victory by five wickets. Don Neely
Donald Owen Neely (21 December 1935 – 16 June 2022) was a New Zealand cricket historian, administrator and player. He served as president of New Zealand Cricket and wrote or co-wrote over 30 books on New Zealand cricket. Early life Neely was born in Wellington in 1935 and attended Rongotai College from 1947 to 1953, where he played 1st XI cricket. He later played in the senior grade for Wellington's Kilbirnie Cricket Club, which has since amalgamated with MSP (Midland St. Pat's) and become Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club. The Eastern Suburbs clubrooms in Kilbirnie Park are now home to the Kilbirnie honours boards that record Neely's successes with the club. Playing career Neely's first-class career lasted from 1964 to 1971 and consisted of 34 matches, played in four seasons with Wellington (three as captain) and three seasons with Auckland.
