Ernest Holmes Sr.
Ernest W. Holmes Sr. (January 17, 1883– June 10, 1945) was born in Hobbs Island, Alabama. He became the inventor of the first tow truck when he fastened various parts to his 1913 Cadillac. He then founded Ernest Holmes Co, which still spiritually lives on through Miller Industries. He later would also serve a term as a member of the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga and the American Society of Automotive Engineers . The birth of an idea Holmes got the idea after assisting a friend of his from business school, John Wiley, after Wiley's Model T flipped over into a ditch. Holmes then modified his 1913 Cadillac to pull cars and transport them to his garage by affixing an iron chain, a pulley, and several poles to the back of his Cadillac. Hobbs Island, Alabama
Hobbs Island is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Madison County, Alabama, Madison County, Alabama, United States. History Hobbs Island is also the name of a nearby island (formerly known as Chickasaw Island) in the Tennessee River. The island was the site of the Chickasaw town Chickasaw Old Fields. Two mounds and the remnants of a dwelling remain on Hobbs Island. Ditto Landing, formerly the site of a ferry on the Tennessee River, is located adjacent to Hobbs Island. Andrew Jackson's army, including Davy Crockett, crossed at Ditto Landing during the Creek War on their way to fight the Red Sticks. Ooltewah ( ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hamilton County, Tennessee, United States. It is a community near Chattanooga. The population was 684 at the 2020 census. Ooltewah is an enclave in the city of Collegedale. History Ooltewah was the county seat of James County, a former Tennessee county that went bankrupt in 1919 and was subsequently incorporated into Hamilton County. International Towing Museum
The International Towing & Recovery Hall of Fame & Museum features restored antique wreckers and equipment from the tow truck industry. Located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the museum also displays related toys, tools, equipment, and pictorial histories. The first tow truck was created about away from the museum at the Ernest Holmes Sr., Ernest Holmes Company in Chattanooga. The collection of tow trucks at the museum ranges from the early days of the automobile and includes miscellaneous antique toys and memorabilia.
