Ernest Hayler Hannaford
Ernest Hayler Hannaford (21 June 1879 – 21 December 1955) was an Australian farmer and politician who represented the South Australian House of Assembly multi-member seat of Murray from 1927 to 1930 for the Liberal Federation. He was a bee-keeper on his father's farm and had 360 hives that produced 10 tons of honey a year. In local politics, he was mayor of the Corporate Town of St Peters from 1926 to 1928 and from 1937 to 1942. The House of Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of South Australia. The other is the Legislative Council. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Adelaide. Overview The House of Assembly was created in 1857, when South Australia attained self-government. The development of an elected legislature — although only men could vote — marked a significant change from the prior system, where legislative power was in the hands of the Governor and the Legislative Council, which was appointed by the Governor. Electoral District Of Murray (South Australia)
Murray is a defunct electoral district that elected members to the House of Assembly, the lower house of the bicameral legislature of the Australian state of South Australia. The electorate, incorporating part of the River Murray, was rural in nature, with Mannum the only large town within its boundaries. From its establishment to the 1938 state election, Murray was a three-member electorate, but was made a single-member electorate afterwards, as part of a system of electoral malapportionment known as the "Playmander". In both incarnations it elected candidates from both major parties as marginal and safe seat holders at various times. If just 21 LCL votes were Labor votes in Murray at the 1968 election, Labor would have formed majority government. Murray was one of two gains in 1968 that put the LCL in office. Liberal Federation
The Liberal Federation was a South Australian political party from 16 October 1923 to 1932. It came into existence as a merger between the rival Liberal Union and National Party, to oppose Labor. Encouraged by the overwhelming success of the Emergency Committee of South Australia at the 1931 federal election, the Liberal Federation merged with the Country Party to form the South Australian Liberal and Country League in 1932, again with overwhelming success at the 1933 state election. Corporate Town Of St Peters
The Corporate Town of St Peters was a local government area in South Australia from 1883 to 1997. It was proclaimed on 2 August 1883, when the area was separated from the District Council of Stepney due to differing interests between the rapidly-growing St Peters area, which contained five-eighths of the Stepney council's ratepayers, and slower-growing suburbs further east. It was divided into four wards (Hackney, East Adelaide, Stepney and Maylands), each represented by two councillors, alongside a directly elected mayor. The council initially met at the Bucks Head Hotel (later the Avenues Hotel), but rapidly sought a town hall due to a lack of office accommodation, and the St Peters Town Hall was built in 1885 at a cost of approximately £3,000, formally opening on 8 March 1886. Susannah Hannaford
Susannah Hannaford, ''née'' Elliott (25 December 1790 – 7 April 1861) was an early immigrant to South Australia. History Susannah and her husband William Hannaford (28 April 1797 – 1838) lived in Rattery, Devon and brought up a large family. After the death of her husband Susannah liquidated all their assets and boarded the ''Brightman'' to emigrate to South Australia, landing in December 1840. The children who made the journey were Richard (19), George (18), Elizabeth (12), Frederick (11), and John (6). Son William arrived in Sydney in 1844 with his wife Harriett nee Toms. Long before any port facilities, they were obliged to wade ashore, Richard carrying his mother on his shoulders.
