Ernest Farrar (politician)
Ernest Henry Farrar (3 February 1879 – 16 June 1952) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in Barnsley in Yorkshire to iron moulder Henry Farrar and Mary Elizabeth Buckley. His family migrated to Sydney very soon after his birth and he was educated at Granville and Petersham, becoming a shearer. At the age of seventeen he joined the Australian Workers' Union, and travelled around Tasmania and New Zealand as a saddle maker. In 1902 he helped to found the Saddle and Harness Makers' Union, and from 1907 to 1912 he was foundation president and state secretary of the Australian Saddlery Trades Federation. In 1908 he married Susan Whitfield, with whom he had one son. He was also a member of the Trades and Labor Council from 1906 and its president in 1910. The Liberal Party of Australia (New South Wales Division), commonly known as the New South Wales Liberals, is the state division of the Liberal Party of Australia in New South Wales. The party currently governs in New South Wales in coalition with the National Party of Australia (NSW). The party is part of the federal Liberal Party which is in opposition nationally. Following the Liberal Party's formation in October 1944, the NSW division of the Liberal Party was formed in January 1945. Richard Meagher
Richard Denis Meagher (11 January 1866 – 17 September 1931) was an Australian solicitor and was the first Labor Lord Mayor of Sydney, serving from 1916 to 1917. Early life Meagher was born in Bathurst, New South Wales and educated at St Stanislaus' College, Bathurst and St Aloysius' College, Sydney. He became an articled clerk to the solicitor J. A. B. Cahill in 1883 and Paddy Crick in 1887. In January 1891, he married Alice Maude Osmond. He became Crick's partner in 1892 and mainly practiced in the police court. Meagher unsuccessfully defended George Dean of attempted murder, but persuaded two out of three royal commissioners in a subsequent inquiry to find that the conviction was unsafe and, as a result, Dean was pardoned. Hector Lamond
Hector Lamond (31 October 1865 – 26 April 1947) was an Australian politician. He was a Nationalist Party member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1917 to 1922, representing the electorate of Illawarra. Early life and career Lamond was born at Broughton Creek, near Berry, New South Wales and educated at public schools. He was apprenticed as a printer to the '' Carcoar Chronicle'' when he was 14 and was its editor at 25. He was involved in the establishment of the Australian Labor Party between 1895 and 1900. In 1902, he married Gwynetha, the daughter of Australian Workers' Union president, William Spence. William Edward Dickson (26 April 1893 – 22 May 1966) was an English-born Australian politician. Early life Dickson was born at Widnes in Lancashire to alkali labourer Edward Dickson and Bertha Stancliffe. He migrated to Australia in 1913 and worked as an accountant for a mine in Broken Hill. He lost his job after opposing conscription during World War I, and worked as a labourer and then as manager of the ''Barrier Daily Truth''. Thomas Steele (Australian Politician)
Thomas Steele (25 August 1887 – 3 September 1963) was a politician and soldier in New South Wales, Australia. He was born in Young to miller Henry Steele and Frances Jell. He was educated at local public schools and worked in a general store before serving in the AIF during World War I. He was a major in the 2nd Division's Field Artillery, and was mentioned in despatches. On 26 August 194 he married Alma Ann Black, with whom he had a daughter. After the war he returned to the general store, later purchasing his own business in Monteagle and acquiring property, on which he ran an orchard. From 1931 to 1933 he was an alderman at Young. Broughton Barnabas O'Conor (1 November 1868 – 2 February 1953) was a politician and barrister in New South Wales, Australia. Early life He was born at Broughton Creek near Nowra to John O'Conor and Anne Stuart Connolly. He attended public schools before matriculating at Sydney Grammar School and then studying at the University of Sydney, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1892 and a Bachelor of Law in 1895. John Marcus Baddeley (20 November 1881 – 1 July 1953) was an Australian politician and member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 25 March 1922 to 8 September 1949. Early life Baddeley was born in Burslem, Staffordshire, England and migrated to Australia with his family at the age of two. He was educated at Merewether public school, but left at eleven to do odd jobs in the Glebe colliery near Merewether and then worked as a coal miner. in 1902 he married Harriet Churchill and they went on to have two sons and three daughters. Edward Kavanagh (Australian Politician)
Edward John Kavanagh (30 October 1871 – 10 October 1956) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sydney to publican William Kavanagh and Ellen Carty. He attended Marist Brothers' College before going to sea on a coastal trading vessel. He later worked as a tailor, and became involved in the Pressers' Union and through that with the Trades and Labor Council. On 31 December 1894 he married Agnes Jane Cousins, with whom he had six children. He was president of the Trades and Labor Council from 1905 to 1906. In 1912 he was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council as a Labor member. He was active in the anti-conscription campaign in 1916 and was arrested during the 1917 general strike.
