Ernest Claes
Andreas Ernestus Josephus Claes (24 October 1885 in Zichem – 2 September 1968 in Elsene) was a Belgian author. He is best known for his regional novels, including ''De Witte'' ("Whitey"), which was the source material for the first Flemish movie: '' De Witte'' (1920). In 1980 it was remade as '' De Witte van Sichem'' by Robbe De Hert. Zichem
Zichem is a village of the town of Scherpenheuvel-Zichem in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. Zichem was an independent municipality until the municipal redistribution of 1977. Zichem is on the list of The most beautiful villages in Flanders as the most beautiful village of Flemish Brabant. History Zichem belonged to Maria van Loon-Heinsberg, who was a descendant of the Counts of Loon. After her marriage in 1440 to John IV, Count of Nassau-Siegen, Jan IV of Nassau, Zichem became part of the county of Nassau-Dillenburg. Before the outbreak of the Eighty Years' War, Zichem was a thriving town. During the siege of Zichem in 1578 by Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma, Alexander Farnese, almost the entire garrison was killed. In 1580, Zichem was hit by an earthquake which toppled the castle's keep. On October 8, the Staatsen retook Zichem. De Witte is a Belgian film of 1934 in black and white, directed by Jan Vanderheyden. It is an adaptation of the homonymous book by Ernest Claes. ''De Witte'' was the first Flemish film production with sound and at the same time it was also very successful. Weeks after the première in Antwerp's Cinema Colosseum the public kept coming to the picture. Plot The story describes the boyishnesses of Louis Verheyden, a white-haired rascal (usually nicknamed "de witte", meaning "the white one") in Zichem, a village at the countryside; in the film everything happens from the child's perspective. Edith Kiel added a love story to the original storyline made by Ernest Claes, something the original author did not like. Wij, Heren Van Zichem
''Wij, Heren van Zichem'' (''We, Gentlemen of Zichem'') was a Flemish TV drama series, originally broadcast between 1969 and 1972 in 26 episodes on the BRT (nowadays the VRT). The program was based on several novels by Ernest Claes, who died just a few months before the show first aired. All episodes were shot in the Flemish village Zichem. At the time it was one of the most popular TV series in Flanders, attracting almost 2,960,000 viewers which is about 3/4 of all Flemish people. Tourism to the village boomed, while it hardly had enough bars, let alone restaurants to accommodate the tourists. In a 2004 interview with Het Nieuwsblad actor Fons Exelmans (who played the Witte) remembered that tourists were often confused because certain houses and buildings were located less close to each other than in the series. Johanna Maria Stephanie Claes-Vetter (February 25, 1884 – October 9, 1974) was a Dutch-born novelist in Belgium who wrote in Dutch. She was born Johanna Maria Stephanie Vetter in Zutphen and married Flemish writer Ernest Claes. Vetter was an advocate for women's rights in Flanders. From 1909 to 1914, she was co-editor of the women's literary magazine ''De Lelie''. She published her first novel ''Eer de mail sluit'' (Before the mail closes) in 1915. In 1927, a collection of short stories ''Verholen krachten'' (Hidden forces) was published. Charelke Dop lives in the Belgian municipality Diest. He pretends to be poor but is rather rich. After his wife Angelina dies he moves to Brussels. Charelke is a manipulative, lying, stingy, immoral but charming widower. He earns a lot of money by declaring people to the German soldiers although he is a smuggler, traitor and blackmailer. He convinces highly placed Belgians that he performed acts of valour (whilst it were only misdeeds) and thus receives medals of honour and an accompanying ceremony. Flemish Literature
Flemish literature is literature from Flanders, historically a region comprising parts of present-day Belgium, France and the Netherlands.
