The Central Coast is a peri-urban region in New South Wales, Australia, lying on the Tasman Sea coast to the north of Sydney and south of Newcastle. The local government area of the Central Coast Council has an estimated population of 333,627 as of June 2018, growing by 1% annually. Comprising localities such as Gosford, Wyong and Terrigal, the area is the third-largest urban area in New South Wales and the ninth-largest urban area in Australia. Terrigal, New South Wales
Terrigal is a coastal town in the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia, located east of Gosford on the Pacific Ocean. It is part of the local government area. History Terrigal was first settled in 1826 by European Settler John Gray, who called his property Tarrygal, after the indigenous Aboriginal place name, signifying 'place of little birds'. Geography and climate The town's long beach is highly popular with tourists with a large Crowne Plaza hotel. Of geographical significance are the Terrigal lagoons. There are in fact two lagoons at Terrigal, one of which has been filled in to make way for a traffic oval. A local landmark is "The Skillion", a promontory which provides a view of all Terrigal. Wamberal () is a coastal suburb of the Central Coast region of New South Wales, Australia, just north of Terrigal. It is part of the local government area and is located adjacent to the Wamberal Lagoon. Wamberal is an Aboriginal word meaning 'where the sea breaks'. Geography and amenities Wamberal is the next suburb from Terrigal, with the two suburbs being separated by the Terrigal Lagoon Estuary. The suburb has two distinct areas; there is a coastal strip that includes Wamberal Beach and the Lagoon estuary which houses medium to high-density residential properties, as well as a semi-rural area, slightly west of the beach. Matcham is a semi-rural suburb of the Central Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the local government area and included in the electoral district of Terrigal. It has a hall and a historic church, St. George's Church, established in 1925. Origin of the name Matcham The Matcham Estate was a grant of 2,560 acres to Charles Horatio Nelson Matcham, a nephew of Lord Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson. Charles Horatio Matcham came to Sydney in 1828. Charles Matcham of the Murrumbidgee River was promised the land as a primary grant and authorised to take possession from 18 October 1831. The deed is registered in book 59/129 and is dated 1 January 1840. He remained at "Bogolong" Murrumbidgee, where he died on 11 March 1844.
