''The Saga of Erik the Viking'' (popularly known as ''Erik the Viking'') is a text-based adventure video game developed by Level 9 Computing and published by Mosaic Publishing in 1984. The game runs on the Amstrad CPC, BBC model B, Commodore 64, and ZX Spectrum. It is loosely based on the 1983 award-winning children's novel of the same name by Terry Jones. A number of characters and items in the game are drawn from the novel, although the plot is completely different. Jones also directed the 1989 film ''Erik the Viking'', which was also completely different, featuring a third plot not present in either the novel or the video game. England-based video game developer Eurocom worked for some time on an NES version of the game which was supposed to be based on the book and the film, though the game was ultimately cancelled in late 1992. Level 9 Computing
Level 9 was a British developer of computer software, active between 1981 and 1991. Founded by Mike, Nicholas and Pete Austin, the company produced software for the BBC Micro, Nascom, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Oric, Atari, Lynx 48k, RML 380Z, Amstrad CPC, MSX, Amiga, Apple II, Memotech MTX, and Enterprise platforms and is best known for its successful text adventure games until a general decline in the text adventure market forced their closure in June 1991. Level 9's first release was an extension to Nascom BASIC called ''Extension Basic''. The first game, also for the Nascom, was called ''Fantasy'' and was similar to ''Valhalla'', but with no graphics. Other products from that era were ''Missile Defence'', ''Bomber'' and ''Space Invasion'' — all for the Nascom. ''The Hobbit'' is an illustrated text adventure computer game released in 1982 for the ZX Spectrum home computer and based on the 1937 book ''The Hobbit'', by J. R. R. Tolkien. It was developed at Beam Software by Philip Mitchell and Veronika Megler and published by Melbourne House. It was later converted to most home computers available at the time including the Commodore 64, BBC Micro, and Oric computers. By arrangement with the book publishers, a copy of the book was included with each game sold. A mosaic is a pattern or image made of small regular or irregular pieces of colored stone, glass or ceramic, held in place by plaster/mortar, and covering a surface.
