Erigeron Muirii
''Erigeron muirii'', or Muir's fleabane, is a rare Arctic species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. It has been found only in northern Alaska and the northern Yukon Territory, including Herschel Island in the Arctic Ocean. It grows in tundra, dry slopes, and rock outcrops. ''Erigeron muirii'' is a small perennial herb rarely more than 12 cm (5 inches) high, covered with thick wool that gives it a gray-green appearance, spreading by means of underground rhizomes. The plant generally produces only one flower head per stem, the head containing sometimes as many as 100 ray florets surrounding numerous yellow disc florets. ''Erigeron muirii'' was discovered by noted conservationist John Muir near Cape Thompson, Alaska during his travels there in 1881. Muir sent the plants he collected to his friend and botanist Asa Gray, who determined that the ''Erigeron'' was a new species, which he named in honor of Muir.

Asa Gray
Asa Gray (November 18, 1810 – January 30, 1888) is considered the most important American botanist of the 19th century. His ''Darwiniana'' was considered an important explanation of how religion and science were not necessarily mutually exclusive. Gray was adamant that a genetic connection must exist between all members of a species. He was also strongly opposed to the ideas of hybridization within one generation and special creation in the sense of its not allowing for evolution. He was a strong supporter of Darwin, although Gray's theistic evolution was guided by a Creator. ''Erigeron'' () is a large genus of plants in the family Asteraceae. It is closely related to the genus ''Aster'' and the true daisies in the genus ''Bellis''. The genus has a cosmopolitan distribution in dry, mountainous areas and grassland, with the highest diversity in North America. Cape Thompson, Alaska
Cape Thompson is a headland on the Chukchi Sea coast of Alaska. It is located 26 miles (42 km) to the southeast of Point Hope, Arctic Slope. It is part of the Chukchi Sea unit of Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Early Inuit names for this cape were "Eebrulikgorruk" and "Uivaq", also spelled "Wevuk" or "Wevok." Cape Thompson was often referred to as "Unvaq Qanitoq," meaning "near cape," as opposed to "Univaq Ungasiktoq" ( Cape Lisburne) meaning "distant cape."
