Eric Martin (Essex Cricketer)
Eric Martin (Born 4 February 1907) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler who played first-class cricket in 1928. He was born in Rock Ferry. Martin made two first-class appearances for Essex during July 1928, the first of which saw him take the wicket of two-time Test cricketer Charlie Hallows — and the second, that of Percy Holmes Percy Holmes (25 November 1886 – 3 September 1971) was an English first-class cricketer, who played for Yorkshire and England. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Rock Ferry
Rock Ferry is an area of Birkenhead on the Wirral Peninsula, England. Administratively it is a ward of the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral. Before local government reorganisation on 1 April 1974, it was part of the county of Cheshire. At the 2011 Census, the population was 14,298. History There are references to a ferry as early as 1357. Ferry services were extended at the start of the 19th century, with steam ferries providing a faster, cheaper and more reliable service than had previously been allowed. By 1800 there was already an inn known as the Rock Ferry House, which was reputed to have been used by William IV as Duke of Clarence, hence the use of the term "Royal" for establishments such as the Royal Rock Hotel (the original inn, much enlarged in 1836) and the Royal Rock Beagles, set up in 1845. Charlie Hallows
Charles Hallows (4 April 1895 – 10 November 1972) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Lancashire and England. A tall left-handed opening batsman, Hallows provided the attacking flair in the successful Lancashire side in the 1920s. In the County Championship-winning years of 1927 and 1928, he was among the top half-dozen batsmen in England and his career average was more than 40 runs per innings. Yet he played only twice for England, once in 1921 and then again once in the inaugural Tests against the West Indies in 1928, scoring 42 runs in all and being dismissed only once. He was also a fine fieldsman with a superb throw. In 1928, Hallows scored more than 1,000 runs ''in'' the month of May, a feat previously achieved only by W. G. Grace and Wally Hammond and never since. He needed 232 runs to complete 1,000 in his last innings in May. He made that score and was out the next ball. Percy Holmes
Percy Holmes (25 November 1886 – 3 September 1971) was an English first-class cricketer, who played for Yorkshire and England. Holmes was born in Oakes, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England. An opening batsman and a fine fielder, Holmes was a late developer who played only a handful of matches for Yorkshire before World War I, but came to immediate prominence after it with 1,886 runs and five centuries in 1919. He was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1920. With Herbert Sutcliffe, Holmes formed for fifteen seasons the most prolific opening partnership in first-class cricket, and 69 times they put on 100 runs or more for the first wicket. Their partnership culminated, in 1932 against Essex at Leyton, in a then-world-record stand of 555, beating the previous Yorkshire (and world) record by Brown and Tunnicliffe in 1898 by just one run.
