Eric Carwardine Francis
Eric Carwardine Francis (30 August 1887 – 26 January 1976) was a British architect and painter who designed a number of notable buildings, particularly in Monmouthshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset, in the early and mid-twentieth century, many in the Arts and Crafts movement, Arts and Crafts style. Life and career He was the son of George Carwardine Francis, a solicitor of Chepstow. He was articled in 1909 as an architect under Sir Guy Dawber, before becoming an assistant to another leading member of the profession, Detmar Blow. He then began working with the writer and architectural historian Henry Avray Tipping. Inheriting a family fortune in 1911, Tipping then bought land at Mounton near Chepstow on which he built a new home. While Tipping described himself as the designer of Mounton House, Francis was responsible for its details and materials. Chepstow ( cy, Cas-gwent) is a town and community in Monmouthshire, Wales, adjoining the border with Gloucestershire, England. It is located on the tidal River Wye, about above its confluence with the River Severn, and adjoining the western end of the Severn Bridge. It is the easternmost settlement in Wales, situated east of Newport, east-northeast of Cardiff, northwest of Bristol and west of London. Chepstow Castle, situated on a clifftop above the Wye and its bridge, is often cited as the oldest surviving stone castle in Britain. The castle was established by William FitzOsbern immediately after the Norman conquest, and was extended in later centuries before becoming ruined after the Civil War. A Benedictine priory was also established within the walled town, which was the centre of the Marcher lordship of Striguil.
