Eremoneura
Eremoneura is a clade of flies within the Brachycera that includes the Empidoidea and the Cyclorrhapha and is a sister of the Asilomorpha. They are thought to have evolved around the Mesozoic. The group includes fossils described in the genus '' Chimeromyia'' from 125 million year old amber which show both empidoid and cyclorrhaphan characters. The monotypic family Apystomyiidae has also been placed within the Eremoneura as a sister of the Cyclorrhapha Cyclorrhapha is an unranked taxon within the infraorder Muscomorpha. Apystomyiidae
Apystomyiidae is a small family (biology), family of fly, flies containing the living genus ''Apystomyia'' and the extinct genera ''Apystomimus'' and ''Hilarimorphites''. The single living Apystomyiidae species, ''Apystomyia elinguis'', is native to California. Species of ''Hilarimorphites'' have been described from Cretaceous, Mid to late Cretaceous Burmese amber, Burmese and New Jersey amber, New Jersey Amber, ambers, while the single ''Apystomimus'' species is from the Late Jurassic of Kazakhstan. Taxonomy The genus ''Apystomyia'' was first collected in the 1940s, described in 1950 and long placed into the bee-fly family Bombyliidae. The first specimens seen after the 1940s type series were collected in 2005. A study in 1993 suggested the genus was a sister-group to Eremoneura, while placement of the genus into Hilarimorphidae or allied to Therevidae was suggested in 1994. Empidoidea
The Empidoidea are a large monophyletic superfamily of true flies, the sister taxon to the Muscomorpha (Cyclorrhapha). These two groups are sometimes united in the unranked taxon Eremoneura. There are some 10,000 known species within Empidoidea,Moulton & Wiegmann (2007) which are represented on all continents except Antarctica. The Brachycera are a suborder of the order Diptera. It is a major suborder consisting of around 120 families. Their most distinguishing characteristic is reduced antenna segmentation. Asilomorpha
The Brachyceran infraorder Asilomorpha is a large and diverse group of flies, containing the bulk of the non muscoid Brachycera. The larvae of asilomorphs are extremely diverse in habits, as well. Classification In most modern classifications, the infraorder Asilomorpha is not recognized, as it is paraphyletic; the Empidoidea are the sister taxon to the Muscomorpha (used here in the same sense as the traditional Cyclorrhapha, not following the Tree of Life Web Project system in this one instance).
