Equestrian At The 1972 Summer Olympics – Individual Jumping
The individual show jumping in equestrian at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich was held at Olympic Stadium on 3 September. It was open to men and women. There were 54 competitors from 21 nations, with two additional non-starters. The event was won by Graziano Mancinelli of Italy, the nation's first victory in individual jumping since 1960 and third overall, tying France for most of all nations. Great Britain extended its podium streak in the event to four Games (no other nation had managed more than two) with Ann Moore's silver. The United States reach the podium for a second straight Games as Neal Shapiro took bronze. Background This was the 14th appearance of the event, which had first been held at the 1900 Summer Olympics and has been held at every Summer Olympics at which equestrian sports have been featured (that is, excluding 1896, 1904, and 1908). Olympic Stadium (Munich)
Olympiastadion () is a stadium located in Munich, Germany. Situated at the heart of the '' Olympiapark München'' in northern Munich, the stadium was the main venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics. The original capacity was maximally and officially around 75,000 seats, during the Olympics; yet average audiences of 80.000 to 90.000 people were registered daily. Also the stadium has hosted many major football matches including the 1974 FIFA World Cup Final and the UEFA Euro 1988 Final - originally the official capacity was 73.000 for football. The stadium hosted the European Cup Finals in 1979, 1993 and 1997. Its current capacity is 69,250. The stadium could support until 11,800 standing places and 57,450 seats; or alternatively 63,000 seated spectators.The roof covers around 40,000 seats. Gerhard "Gerd" Wiltfang (27 April 1946 in Stuhr, Lower Saxony – 1 July 1997 in Thedinghausen) was a German equestrian and Olympic champion. He won a gold medal in show jumping with the West German team at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. In 1978, he won the World Championship in show jumping, and in 1982 the silver medal.
