Epreskert Art Colony
Epreskert Art Colony ( hu, Epreskerti művésztelep; the name means "Mulberry Garden" in Hungarian language, Hungarian) was an artists' colony in Budapest in the last decades of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Among the artists who worked and lived there the most important were sculptors György Zala (sculptor), György Zala and Adolf Huszár, and painter Árpád Feszty. Location The artists' colony was located in the Terézváros district of Budapest (District VI.) in the area of the former Epreskert garden. The colony occupied an oblong shaped block bounded by Bajza, Lendvay, Epreskert (after 1900 Munkácsy Mihály) and Kmety Street. In 1886 the block was divided into ten lots for ateliers. Béla Pállik
Béla Pállik (2 February 1845, Nagymihály – 27 July 1908, Budapest) was a Hungarian artist, opera singer and theater director. He was best known for his animal painter, animal paintings and was nicknamed "Birkapiktor" ("Sheep-painter"). Biography He went to Budapest to pursue his art studies and work in the studios of , a German painter who was living there at the time. His parents were unable to support his studies for long, so he chose to support himself by selling copies of the old masters he made at the local museums, but eventually concluded that portrait painting would be most profitable. Soon after, he acquired an important patron; Count , a well-known art collector. He spent some time at the Count's estate in Várpalota, doing portraits, some of his first animal paintings and frescoes for the library at Zichy Castle. An animal painter is an artist who specialises in (or is known for their skill in) the portrayal of animals. The ''OED'' dates the first express use of the term "animal painter" to the mid-18th century: by English physician, naturalist and writer John Berkenhout (1726-1791). From the early 20th century, ''wildlife artist'' became a more usual term for contemporary animal painters. History Especially in the 17th century, animal painters would often collaborate with other artists, who would either paint the main subject in a historical or mythological piece, or the landscape background in a decorative one. Eduard "Ede" Telcs was a Hungarian sculptor, and medallist; born at Baja, Hungary on 12 May 1872; died 1948 in Budapest. At the age of twelve he went to Budapest and studied decorative art, but he soon left that city for Vienna, where he was educated for four years in the Allgemeine Bildhauerschule, winning the Füger gold medal with his "St. Boniface Striking Down the Banner of Wotan." He next entered Professor Zumbusch's school, where he studied for three years, gaining the school's first prize with his "Two Drinkers," which 1894 won a medal of the second class at the World's Fair in Antwerp. Telcs attracted particular attention in 1900 by being awarded, for his monument in honor of Empress Elizabeth of Austria, first prize among many competitors. Ferenc Deák (politician)
Ferenc Deák de Kehida (archaically English: Francis Deak, hr, Franjo Deák; 17 October 180328 January 1876) was a Hungarian statesman and Minister of Justice. He was known as "The Wise Man of the Nation" and one of the greatest figures of Hungary's liberal movement. He was an instrumental contributor to a number of major events in Hungarian history, including passing and support of the April laws, the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 and the Hungarian Nationalities Law (1868). While generally supporting reformist policies, he was well recognized for finding and negotiating reasonable middle ground compromises between various extremist political factions throughout his career.
