Episode (film)
''Episode'' is an Austrian film from 1935. It belongs to the popular Austrian light romantic comedy genre known as the ''Wiener Film'', but also contains, for a film of this genre, unusually serious social comment. It was written and produced by Walter Reisch. The film has a particular importance in German-language film history as the only Austrian film with a Jewish producer that was permitted to be imported and shown in Nazi Germany after 1933 and the ban on Jews working in the film industry. The German premiere took place on 23 August 1935 in the ''Gloria-Palast'' in Berlin. The Austrian premiere was in a Vienna cinema on 13 September of the same year. It was first broadcast on television by the ARD on 2 December 1958. On 1 April 1994 it was released on VHS video. Plot In Vienna in 1922 daily life is dominated by inflation and unemployment. Walter Reisch
Walter Reisch (May 23, 1903 – March 28, 1983) was an Austrian-born director and screenwriter. He also wrote lyrics to several songs featured in his films, one popular title is "Flieger, grüß mir die Sonne". He was married to the dancer and actress Poldi Dur and was the cousin of Georg Kreisler. Maria Eis
Maria Eis (born Prague, 22 February 1896 - died Vienna, 18 December 1954) was an Austrian actress of stage and screen. Between 1918 and 1923 Eis performed on stage at the ''Neue Wiener Bühne'' (New Vienna stage), the ''Renaissancebühne'' (Renaissance stage) and the ''Kammerspielen''. Later, she moved to Hamburg, where she played at the Thalia Theater and at the ''Deutschen Schauspielhaus'' until 1932. When she returned to Vienna, she joined an ensemble group at the ''Burgtheatre'' (City Theatre), where she played character and tragic roles up until her death. Her performances, such as Elizabeth I, Lady Macbeth, Sappho, Medea, and Iphigenia are considered noteworthy. Eis also acted in a number of successful films after 1935. A section of road in front of the former Karl Michael Ziehrer House has been renamed "Maria Eis Gasse" in her memory. Rosa Albach-Retty (born Rosa Clara Franziska Helene Retty; 26 December 1874 – 26 August 1980) was an Austrian film and stage actress. Life Born into a well-known family of Austrian actors, she was the daughter of actor and director Rudolf Retty. Trained by her father, she began her stage career in 1890 at the Deutsches Theater and the Lessing Theater in Berlin, where she successfully performed in the title role of ''Minna von Barnhelm''. She was also known for breeches roles in Little Lord Fauntleroy and The Merchant of Venice. In 1895, she went to the Volkstheater in Vienna and in 1903 joined the Burgtheater ensemble, where she received the title of ''Hofschauspielerin'' (Actress of the Court) in 1905. She became an honorary member of the Burgtheater in 1928 and in 1958 she gave her final performance.
