Episcopal Conference Of Malawi
The local assembly of bishops is the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (Episcopal Conference of Malawi, ECM), established in 1961. Constituent bodies of the ECM are: the plenary assembly of bishops, the Catholic Secretariat and six committees (Catholic development, justice and peace, education, health, pastoral care and communications). The ECM is a member of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) and Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM). Association Of Member Episcopal Conferences In Eastern Africa
The Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) is the association of episcopal conferences of Eastern Africa and the coordinating body of the Catholic dioceses. The AMECEA was established in 1961, with Cardinal Archbishop of Lusaka Adam Kozlowiecki, SJ, its founding president. It is one of ten members of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar(SECAM). Members of the AMECEA include the episcopal conferences of Ethiopia (1979), Eritrea (1993), Kenya (1961), Malawi (1961), Tanzania (1961), Zambia (1961), Sudan (1979), Uganda (1961). Somalia (1995) and Djibouti (2002) have observer status. The current chairman is Most Rev Charles Joseph Sampa Kasonde (since July 21, 2018). Lilongwe
Lilongwe (, , ) is the capital and most populated city of the African country of Malawi. It has a population of 989,318 as of the 2018 Census, up from a population of 674,448 in 2008. In 2020 that figure was 1,122,000. The city is located in the central region of Malawi, in the district of the same name, near the borders with Mozambique and Zambia, and it is an important economic and transportation hub for central Malawi. It is named after the Lilongwe River. History Lilongwe was first set up as a boma by the local leader Njewa in 1902. It became an administrative center in 1904. The Catholic Church in Malawi is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome and the Malawi bishops. History The first Catholic missionaries were White Fathers (Pères Blancs in French) who arrived in Malawi in 1889. By 1904, the White Fathers had three permanent mission stations at Kachebere, Likuni, and Mua, and the Montforts had two missions, at Nguludi and Nzama. Thomas Luke Msusa, S.M.M. (born 2 February 1962) is archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Blantyre in Malawi. He is a convert to the Catholic Church from Islam. Life He is the son of a Muslim imam and at the age of seven left his village to study. He converted to the Catholic Church and was baptized at the age of twelve and after this entered the seminary, facing opposition of his family due to his conversion. Upon his return, he was rejected by his family except his uncle, himself a convert to the Catholic Church. On 3 August 1996, Msusa was ordained to priesthood in the Company of Mary. Mzuzu
Mzuzu is the capital of Malawi's Northern Region and is the third largest city by population in Malawi. The city has 221,272 residents and 20,000 commuters (Mzuzu University students) with about 1.7 million people in its metropolitan area. It is situated in Mzimba District. Mzuzu lies in a gap in the Viphya Mountains, and the agricultural region surrounding the city specializes in tea, rubber and coffee cultivation. Chikwawa
Chikwawa is a town with a population of 6,114 according to the 2018 census located in the Southern Region of Malawi on the west bank of the Shire River. It is the administrative capital of the Chikwawa District. Chikwawa lies almost south of Blantyre, the commercial capital of Malawi. Chikwawa, then known as Chibisa's village, was the first town in Malawi to be seen by European explorers, when visited in March 1859 by David Livingstone's second Zambesi expedition.
