Epiphany Apostolic College
Epiphany Apostolic College, formerly known as the Josephite Collegiate Seminary, was a Catholic Church, Catholic minor seminary founded in Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland in 1889 by John R. Slattery for the Mill Hill Missionaries, a United Kingdom, UK-based society of apostolic life. A few years later, the seminary came under the service of the Josephites (Maryland), Society of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart (the Josephites), an American offshoot if the Mill Hills that specifically serves African Americans. Two of the co-founders of the Josephites served as rectors of the seminary in its early history, Dominic Manley and Charles Uncles, the first Black Catholicism, African-American Catholic priest trained and ordained in the United States. Eugene Antonio Marino, Society of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart (Josephites), SSJ (May 29, 1934 – November 12, 2000) was an Americans, American Roman Catholic Church, Catholic prelate who served as Archbishop of Atlanta, Georgia from 1988 until 1990, becoming the first African American archbishop in history. He was also the first such auxiliary bishop in Washington, D.C. and the first to be secretary of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, National Conference of Catholic Bishops. During his time as archbishop of Atlanta, he helped address the conduct of other priests, until his own relationship with a lay minister became public knowledge. Edward Francis Murphy, SSJ (1892 – 1975) was an American playwright, novelist, educator, and Catholic priest known for creating the "first Catholic best-seller", the novel '' The Scarlet Lily''. He was also a close friend of Sinclair Lewis and introduced him to the Black community, inspiring his novel ''Kingsblood Royal''. Joseph Lawson Edward Howze (born Lawson Edward Howze, August 30, 1923 – January 9, 2019) was an African-American prelate of the Catholic Church. He served as the first Bishop of Biloxi from 1977 to 2001, and was the first Black Catholic bishop of a US diocese. Early life Howze was born in Daphne, Alabama. He was the oldest of four children born to Albert Otis Howze Sr. and Helen Lawson Howze. His mother died when he was five. He had six siblings in total.
