Epic 40,000
Epic is a tabletop wargame set in the fictional ''Warhammer 40,000'' universe. Whereas ''Warhammer 40,000'' involves small battles between forces of a few squads of troops and two or three vehicles, Epic features battles between armies consisting of dozens of tanks and hundreds of soldiers. Due to the comparatively larger size of the battles, ''Epic'' miniatures are smaller than those in ''Warhammer 40,000'', with a typical human being represented with a 6mm high figure, as opposed to the 28mm minis used in ''Warhammer 40,000''. Since being first released in 1988 as ''Adeptus Titanicus'', it has gone through various editions with varying names. In the ''Warhammer Fantasy'' universe, ''Warmaster'' fills much the same "large-scale battle" role as ''Epic'' does in the ''Warhammer 40,000'' universe, though the two systems do not share rules. ''Warhammer 40,000'' is a miniature wargame produced by Games Workshop. It is the most popular miniature wargame in the world, and is particularly popular in the United Kingdom. The first edition of the rulebook was published in September 1987, and the ninth and current edition was released in July 2020. As in other miniature wargames, players enact battles using Miniature model (gaming), miniature models of warriors and fighting vehicles. The playing area is a tabletop model of a battlefield, comprising models of buildings, hills, trees, and other terrain features. Each player takes turns moving their model warriors around the battlefield and fighting their opponent's warriors. These fights are resolved using dice and simple arithmetic. In the fictional universe of ''Warhammer 40,000'', the Tyranids are a race and a playable army in the tabletop miniatures wargame. The Tyranids are described as a nomadic society of aliens which originated from beyond the Milky Way Galaxy and arrived on its periphery with the intent of consuming all life and biomass within. In Games Workshop's ''Warhammer Fantasy'' and ''Warhammer 40,000'' fictional universes, Chaos refers to parasitic entities which live in a different plane of reality known as '' the Warp'' or ''Immaterium'' in ''Warhammer 40,000'' and as the Realm of Chaos in ''Warhammer Age of Sigmar''. The term can refer to these warp entities and their influence, the servants and worshippers of these entities, or even the parallel universe in which these entities are supposed to reside. The most powerful of these warp entities are those known as the Chaos Gods, also sometimes referred to as the Dark Gods, Ruinous Powers, or the Powers of Chaos. In the fictional universe of ''Warhammer 40,000'', the Imperial Guard is the army of the Imperium in the ''Warhammer 40,000'' tabletop miniature wargame. The Imperial Guard, now known as the "Astra Militarum", are a specific army or faction in the ''Warhammer 40,000'' and '' Epic'' tabletop games and universe. The army itself is characterised by being capable of fielding a multitude of lightly armoured infantry in combination with some of the toughest and most powerful tanks in the game.
