Sony Records
Sony Records was a record label founded by R&B duo Ike & Tina Turner in 1963. It was not affiliated with Sony Group Corporation. Ike Turner produced singles by members of the Kings of Rhythm and the Ikettes on Sony Records. Records on the label were distributed by CIRCA distributing firm. CIRCA (Consolidated International Record Company of America) was formed in 1962 to operate as a releasing company for independent labels by working with various distributors around the US. A record label, or record company, is a brand or trademark of music recordings and music videos, or the company that owns it. Sometimes, a record label is also a publishing company that manages such brands and trademarks, coordinates the production, manufacture, distribution, marketing, promotion, and enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos, while also conducting talent scouting and development of new artists, and maintaining contracts with recording artists and their managers. Sonja Records
Sonja Records was a Los Angeles-based record label founded by musician Ike Turner in 1963. Turner set up the label to release singles from the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, which included his then wife, R&B singer Tina Turner, as well as other artists he was producing. Tina Turner's first record as a solo artist was released on Sonja Records in 1964. In the Northeast, Sonja was distributed by Superior Record Sales Company, Inc. in New York, and Schwartz Brothers Inc. in the Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia markets. In the Midwest, Concord Record Sales in Cleveland and All State Record Distributing Company in Chicago. On the West Coast, California Records in Los Angeles. Prann Records was a record label founded by musician Ike Turner in 1963. Turner used this label to release singles by artist he was producing outside of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Records on Prann were distributed by CIRCA distributing firm. CIRCA (Consolidated International Record Company of America) was formed in 1962 to operate as a releasing company for independent labels by working with various distributors around the US. Artists Singer-songwriter George Jackson released his first single on Prann Jackson started writing songs while in his teens, and in 1963 introduced himself to Ike Turner at a concert. Turner took him to Cosimo Matassa's studios in New Orleans to record for Prann. Singer Fontella Bass recorded for Prann early in her career when she was a member of Oliver Sain's band. Teena Records was a record label founded by R&B duo Ike & Tina Turner in 1963. Ike Turner named the label after his wife Tina Turner. Records on Teena were distributed by CIRCA distributing firm. CIRCA (Consolidated International Record Company of America) was formed in 1962 to operate as a releasing company for Independent record label, independent labels by working with various distributors around the US. While the Ike & Tina Turner Revue were constantly on the road performing, Ike Turner found time to record the artist in his band. Turner used this label to release singles by vocalist within the Revue, notably the Ikettes. He wrote and produced all the songs on the label. The second single, "Prisoner in Love" by the Ikettes, was changed to "No Bail in This Jail" in order to avoid confusion with "Prisoner of Love" by James Brown. Ernest Ray Lane (March 16, 1931 – July 8, 2012) was an American blues pianist. He played various blues musicians and bands, including with Pinetop Perkins, Robert Nighthawk, Ike Turner, George "Harmonica" Smith, and Canned Heat. Lane also released singles and album as a solo artist. Life and career Lane was born on March 16, 1931, in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Lane and his siblings, three sisters and two brothers, lived with his mother Ethel Thomas in Clarksdale. His father, John Lane, was a painter in a part of town called Overtown. Lane and his childhood friend Ike Turner spent time living with Lane's father who also played ragtime piano. One day, Lane and Turner heard blues pianist Pinetop Perkins playing boogie-woogie at his father's house. His playing piqued their interest, and Perkins taught them how to play piano.
