Ephrata High School (Pennsylvania)
Ephrata High School is a sub-urban/urban, public secondary school in the Ephrata Area School District located in Ephrata in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. Washington Education Center Washington Educational Center is on Marshall Street in Ephrata Borough. It opened in October 1999, in the vacant former Washington Elementary School, as an alternative for students who could not complete the requirements of a traditional brick-and-mortar education. In 2011, the school board changed the classification of the school to a second high school in the school district. The new status means that, upon successful completion or requirements, students receive an Ephrata High School diploma. Extracurriculars The district offers a wide variety of clubs, activities and sports. The school's marching band was ranked in the top 10 best schools in the nation in 2014. Ray Mentzer
Ray Mentzer (August 3, 1953June 12, 2001) born in Philadelphia was the 1976 Junior Mr. America, 1978 IFBB Mr. USA and was winner of the 1979 Mr. America competition. Ray's brother, Mike Mentzer won the rival IFBB Mr. America in 1976 during Ray's Junior title. He was a proponent of heavy duty training along with Mike and although retiring from competition in 1982, carried on training to the heavy duty high-intensity training principles. In 1983, he flew to Florida in order to be trained by Arthur Jones. At a bodyweight of a then unthinkable 250 plus pounds, he added even more muscle within a month, to 260 but leaner. At one time, training for just six weeks to prove the invalidity of the Bulgarian system, he squatted for 2 repetitions. He died from kidney failure, a complication resulting from Berger's disease in Rolling Hills, California. Stanley Von Nieda
Stanley Lee Von Nieda Jr. (born June 19, 1922) is an American retired professional basketball player and coach. He was born in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Career He played basketball at Ephrata High School and Penn State University. Enlisting in the army during World War II, he played with the Fort Benning, Georgia paratroopers. There he led the country, both college and service teams, in scoring with 1062 points in 44 games. After being discharged he played for the Lancaster Red Roses in the Eastern Basketball League where he led that league in scoring, averaging better than 24 points per game. In 1947 he began playing for the Tri-Cities BlackHawks in the National Basketball League (NBL). While with the Blackhawks he made the All-Rookie team averaging 12 points a game. The team made it to the final round of the playoffs in both of the years he played there. Miss America
Miss America is an annual competition that is open to women from the United States between the ages of 17 and 25. Originating in 1921 as a "bathing beauty revue", the contest is now judged on competitors' talent performances and interviews. As of 2018, there is no longer a swimsuit portion to the contest, or consideration of physical appearance. Miss America travels about 20,000 miles a month, changing her location every 24 to 48 hours, touring the nation and promoting her particular platform of interest. Evelyn Ay Sempier
Evelyn Margaret Sempier (née Ay; March 8, 1933 – October 18, 2008) was winner of the 1954 Miss America beauty pageant. Early life Ay was born the daughter of German immigrants in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Pageantry She had a short but successful career in smaller beauty contests. As Miss Ephrata Fair and Tobacco Queen of Lancaster County in 1950, she wore a crown that looked like tobacco leaves. Joanne Parrott was elected as a member of Maryland House of Delegates, District 35A, which serves Harford County. She won one of two seats, along with Barry Glassman, defeating incumbent Michael G.
