''Enter Madame'' was a 1920 Broadway three-act comedy written by Gilda Varesi and Dolly Byrne, produced and directed by Brock Pemberton. Varesi also played the lead role of opera singer Madame Lisa Della Robia with Norman Trevor playing her husband Gerald Fitzgerald. It ran a total of 350 performances from August 16, 1920 to October 2, 1920 at the Garrick Theatre, from October 4, 1920 - May 21, 1921 at the Fulton Theatre, then May 23, 1921 - April 1922 at Theatre Republic. It was included in Burns Mantle's ''The Best Plays of 1920-1921''. It was adapted into two films of the same name ''Enter Madame'' (1922) and the 1935 remake starring Cary Grant. Gilda Varesi
Gilda Varesi (September 28, 1887 – May 27, 1965), also known as Gilda Varesi Archibald, was an Italian-born actress and playwright. Early life Gilda Varesi was born in Milan, and adopted as the daughter of opera singer Elena Boccabadati Varesi. Her maternal grandparents Felice Varesi and Cecilia Boccabadati Gazzudo were also opera singers. Luigia Boccabadati was Gilda's great-grandmother. Gilda Varesi, who was named for a character in Verdi's ''Rigoletto'', moved to Chicago as a child, with her family. Career Varesi started on stage in Chicago, with the Ben Greet Players, before joining Helena Modjeska's troupe, then working with Minnie Maddern Fiske in ''Salvation Nell'' (1908) and ''Little Italy''. Robert Burns Mantle (December 23, 1873February 9, 1948) was an American theater critic. He later moved to Chicago, Illinois, and then New York City, New York, in 1911. He was at the ''New York Evening Mail'' until 1922, and then the '' Daily News'' until his retirement in 1943. Gavin Muir (September 8, 1900 – May 24, 1972) was an American film, television, and theatre actor. Biography Muir's mother was American, and his father was Scottish. Although he was born in Chicago, he was educated in England at the University College School. Muir's career included acting on Broadway through 1933. His first film appearance was in 1932 in a short film, then in John Ford's '' Mary of Scotland'' in 1936. The New Victory Theater is a theater at 209 West 42nd Street in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City, near Times Square. Built in 1900 as the Republic Theatre (also Theatre Republic), it was designed by Albert Westover and developed by Oscar Hammerstein I as a Broadway theater. Garrick Theatre (New York)
The Garrick Theatre was a 910-seat theatre built in 1890 and located on 67 West 35th Street, New York. Designed by Francis Hatch Kimball, it was commissioned by Edward Harrigan, who also managed the theatre, originally named Harrigan's Theatre, until 1895. Richard Mansfield took over from Harrigan, renaming it the Garrick. Charles Frohman assumed management from 1896 until 1915. The Shuberts bought it in 1916 and leased it to Otto Kahn, who named it Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier, after a theatre in Paris of the same name. Kahn later gave it to the Theatre Guild and it resumed the name Garrick Theatre in 1919. The Shuberts resumed management in 1925 and the theatre closed as a playhouse in 1929. After a short run of burlesque, the building was demolished in 1932. Fulton Theatre
The Fulton Theatre was a Broadway theatre located at 210 West 46th Street in Manhattan, New York City, that was opened in 1911. It was renamed the Helen Hayes Theatre in 1955. The theatre was demolished in 1982. Since the former Little Theatre became the current Helen Hayes Theatre, the Fulton Theatre is now sometimes referred to as the First Helen Hayes Theatre. History Built by the architects Herts & Tallant for Henry B. Harris and Jesse Lasky, it was originally opened on April 27, 1911, under the name Folies-Bergere as a dinner theatre with vaudeville. The building featured three murals and a color scheme by leading American muralist William de Leftwich Dodge.
