Enstone Spark
Enstone Spark (foaled 6 June 1975) was a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse. She is best known for winning the classic 1000 Guineas in 1978. Racing career Trained by Barry Hills, at age two, Enstone Spark won the 1977 Lowther Stakes at York Racecourse. In 1978, her Canadian owner, Dick Bonnycastle, was planning to ship Enstone Spark to race in California but an outbreak of contagious equine metritis forced a change of plans and she remained to compete in England. In 1978 Enstone Spark earned the most important win of her career at Newmarket Racecourse with a victory in the Classic 1,000 Guineas Stakes. It came when she was still more than a month shy of her third birthday. Palestine (1947–1974) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. Owned and bred by Aga Khan III he was out of the mare Una and sired by Fair Trial. Affirmed (February 21, 1975 – January 12, 2001) was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who is the eleventh winner of the American Triple Crown. Affirmed was well known for his famous rivalry with Alydar, whom he met ten times, including coming second in each of the three 1978 Triple Crown races. After Affirmed won the Triple Crown, there was a 37-year wait until American Pharoah swept the series in 2015. Contagious equine metritis (CEM) is a type of metritis (uterine inflammation) in horses that is caused by a sexually transmitted infection. It is thus an equine venereal disease of the equine reproductive system, genital tract of horses, brought on by the ''Taylorella equigenitalis'' bacteria and spread through sexual contact. The disease was first reported in 1977, and has since been reported worldwide. Signs Signs in mares appear ten to fourteen days after breeding to an infected or carrier stallion.
