English Ladies' Amateur Championship
The English Women's Amateur Championship is the women's national amateur match play golf championship of England. It was first played in 1912 and is currently organised by England Golf. The English Women's Amateur Championship is contested through two phases. It begins with a 36-hole stroke play competition, with the leading 32 competitors progressing to the knock-out match play competition. All matches in the knock-out phase are played over 18 holes except the final, which is played over 36 holes. It is a close event, entry being restricted to women born in England, or with one parent or grandparent born in England, or resident in England for five years (two years if under 18). Joyce Wethered has been the most successful player, winning the event five times in succession from 1920 to 1924. England Golf is the governing body for male and female amateur golf in England. It represents over 1,900 golf clubs with over 740,000 members and is affiliated to The R&A, the joint global governing body of golf. It was formed in 2012 as a merger between the English Golf Union, the governing body for men, and the English Women's Golf Association, the equivalent body for women. England Golf is a member of Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU). History The English Golf Union was founded in 1924 and is based at the National Golf Centre in Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire. It was run as a non-profit-making organisation and is funded mainly by affiliation fees paid by golfers as part of their club membership fee. Samantha Giles (golfer)
Samantha Jo Giles (born 28 October 1994) is a Cornish professional golfer who currently plays on the Ladies European Tour, LET Access Series and Rose Ladies Series professional tours and has represented England at the highest amateur level. Giles is the first female amateur golfer to hold all three major English women's amateur titles, English Women's Mid-Amateur, English Women's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship and the English Women's Amateur Championship. She has also been Cornwall's women's county champion (2015). Early career Giles was born in Plymouth to parents Paul and Carol, both of whom had represented England at table tennis, Carol at the Commonwealth games and Paul as national champion.
