Englehart (Canada 2016 Census population 1,479) is a town in the Canadian province of Ontario, located on the Blanche River in the Timiskaming District. Kap-Kig-Iwan Provincial Park is located near the town of Englehart. History The Town of Englehart was created by the building of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario (T & NO) Railway and named after Chairman Jacob Lewis Englehart. It was incorporated as the Town of Englehart in January 1908, as a half-way divisional point between North Bay, Ontario and what became Cochrane, Ontario, where the T & NO Railway met with the new Transcontinental Railway line (now the CNR) being built west from Quebec City across the north to the Western Provinces, creating the town of Cochrane. In 1905, Jacob Lewis Englehart, from Ohio, became a key figure in the development of the railway north of North Bay in Ontario. Jacob Lewis Englehart
Jacob Lewis Englehart (November 2, 1847 – April 1, 1921) was a Canadian-American business magnate, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Englehart is best known for his role in the formation of Imperial Oil in 1880 to combat the growing influence of John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil. Englehart was one of the most successful oil refiners in Canada during the 1800's and oversaw the completion of the Temiskaming and North Ontario Railway. Biography Early life Englehart was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 2, 1847. In 1860, he travelled to New York, where he found employment at Sonneborn, Dryfoos and Company as a salesman. The firm blended and sold whisky from various distilleries, and legal difficulties drove Englehart and his employers to emigrate to Canada in the spring of 1866. Englehart River
The Englehart River is a river in Timiskaming District in northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is in the Saint Lawrence River drainage basin and is a right tributary of the Blanche River. Course The river begins at Fallduck Lakes in Terry Township. It flows southeast, passes under Ontario Highway 66, and reaches Long Lake. It exits the lake heading east, passes over one of two dams and under Ontario Highway 573 at the community of Charlton (in the municipality of Charlton and Dack), then heads under Ontario Highway 560. The river passes over a series of waterfalls and rapids (Sunday Creek Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Hell's Gate, High Falls, and Nuisance Rapids), turns north, flows under Ontario Highway 11 and the Ontario Northland Railway mainline at the town of Englehart, then reaches its mouth at the Blanche River at Marter Township. Ontario Northland Railway
The Ontario Northland Railway is a Canadian railway operated by the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission, a provincial Crown agency of the government of Ontario. Originally built to develop the Lake Timiskaming and Lake Nipissing areas, the railway soon became a major factor in the economic growth of the province. After decades of difficult construction through the Canadian Shield, workers reached James Bay in 1932. While blasting the route through the shield, geologists discovered deposits of valuable minerals such as gold, silver, copper and nickel. Kap-Kig-Iwan Provincial Park
Kap-Kig-Iwan Provincial Park is a protected area in the incorporated townships of Charlton and Dack and Evanturel in Timiskaming District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. Established in 1957, the park is located along the Englehart River, off Ontario Highway 11 about south of the town of Englehart. Kap-Kig-Iwan is classified as a Natural Environment park and is a provincial park of Ontario. Kap-Kig-Iwan has both electric and non-electric campsites.
