England Women's National Basketball Team
The England women's national basketball team represents England in international basketball competitions. The team is organized by England Basketball, the sport's governing body in England. In 2005 England, along with the basketballscotland and their counterparts in Wales combined forces to form the Great Britain women's national basketball team, with the target goal to field a competitive team capable of winning medals at the London 2012 summer Olympics. Commonwealth Games Melbourne 2006 The men's and women's teams were competing for the first time as England in a major multi-sport event, and it was the first Commonwealth Games in which basketball was featured. The women's team included Jane Thackray, who had more than 50 international appearances. Also on the squad was Andrea Congreaves, one of the most outstanding players produced by England, as well as some exciting up-and-coming talent. EuroBasket, also commonly referred to as the European Basketball Championship, is the main international basketball competition that is contested quadrennially, by the senior men's national teams that are governed by FIBA Europe, which is the European zone within the International Basketball Federation. The competition was first held in 1935. The former Soviet Union holds the record for most gold medals with a total of 14. England at the 2006 Commonwealth Games were represented by the Commonwealth Games Council for England (CGCE). The country went by the abbreviation ''ENG'' and used the St George's Cross as flag and Land of Hope and Glory as the national anthem. Diver Tony Ally bore England's flag at the opening ceremony whilst shooter Mick Gault bore the flag during the closing ceremony, both chosen by a vote of England team managers from a list of nominations. Expectations England entered these Games, held in Melbourne; Australia, after playing hosts to the previous Games in Manchester in Manchester 2002. The medal tally was not expected to be a large as at the 2002 Games, where England had a home advantage and achieved a total of 166 medals including 54 Gold, 51 Silver and 60 Bronze to finish in second place behind Australia.
