The event was won by Australian Alf Mitchell with a throw of , breaking his personal best by over a foot. Mitchell won by ahead of the defending champion, Englishmen Colin Smith and fellow countryman Nick Birks who won the bronze medal. The women's 4 × 110 yards relay at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games as part of the athletics programme was held at the Perry Lakes Stadium on Saturday 1 December 1962. The event was won Australian team of Joyce Bennett, Glenys Beasley, Brenda Cox and Betty Cuthbert in a time of 46.6. They narrowly finished ahead of English team of Ann Packer, Dorothy Hyman, Daphne Arden and Betty Moore and the New Zealand quartet of Nola Bond, Molly Cowan, Doreen Porter and Avis McIntosh who won bronze. England was leading by five yards coming in the final baton change, however Moore started her run too early and had to stop almost dead before receiving the baton. Ann Packer
Ann Elizabeth Packer MBE (born 8 March 1942) is an English former sprinter, hurdler and long jumper. She won a gold medal in the 800 metres and a silver in the 400 metres at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Early life In 1959 Packer won the English Schools 100 yards title. Next year she competed internationally in the long jump. She attended Didcot Girls' Grammar School (now Didcot Girls' School). Career In 1962, she reached the finals in the 200 metres at the European Championships and in the 80 metres hurdles at the Commonwealth Games; she was also part of the 4 × 110 yards relay team that won two medals at these competitions. In 1963 she focused on the 400 metres, and already by her fourth 400m race ran a world-level time of 53.6 seconds. When she was selected for the 1964 British Olympic team Packer worked as a physical education teacher at Coombe County Girls' School, New Malden, Surrey. Dorothy Hyman
Dorothy Hyman (born 9 May 1941) is a retired English sprinter. She competed at the 1960 and 1964 Summer Olympics in the 100 m, 200 m and 4 × 100 m events, winning three medals. She also won individual 100 m gold and 200 m silver at the 1962 European Championships in Belgrade and, representing England, completed the 100 yd/220 yd sprint double at the 1962 Commonwealth Games. Winner of the 1963 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, she has a stadium in her home village of Cudworth named in her honour. In 2011, she was inducted into the England Athletics Hall of Fame. Adrian Peter Metcalfe (2 March 1942 – 2 July 2021) was a British athlete and broadcaster. He set a UK record for the 400m in 1961 and won silver relay medals at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, the 1962 European Athletics Championships and the 1964 Summer Olympics.
