Enginemans Resthouse
Enginemans Resthouse is a heritage-listed former railway workers' cottage, now private residence, at 39 Brandling Street, Alexandria, City of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was built from 1902 to 1903. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The Enginemans Resthouse was built in 1902-03, when the Railway Commissioners resumed land on Brandling Street for the construction of a new barracks or dormitory to provide accommodation for train drivers, firemen and guards when they were away from their homes. The Eveleigh Railway Workshops, adjacent to the site, had a major locomotive depot for the storage and servicing of running steam locomotives. For such depots, it was normal practice to have a nearby "barracks" building to accommodate staff between shifts. The New South Wales State Heritage Register, also known as NSW State Heritage Register, is a heritage list of places in the state of New South Wales, Australia, that are protected by New South Wales legislation, generally covered by the Heritage Act 1977 and its 2010 amendments. The register is administered by the Heritage Council of NSW via Heritage NSW, a division of the Government of New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment. The register was created in 1999 and includes items protected by heritage schedules that relate to the State, and to regional and to local environmental plans. The State Rail Authority, a former statutory authority of the Government of New South Wales, operated and maintained railways in the Australian state of New South Wales from July 1980 until December 2003. History The ''Transport Authorities Act 1980'' separated the functions of the Public Transport Commission (formerly responsible for all public transport) and established the State Rail Authority.
