Hester Henrietta (Hetta) Crouse Empson (1915–1996) was a South African sculptor. She was described as a "sculptor, political activist, adventurer and socialite" in her obituary in the Times. She and her husband William Empson were involved in the London bohemian group that included George Orwell, Louis MacNeice, Jill Neville, Fay Weldon, Lewis Wolpert and Kathleen Raine. Sir Richard Empson (c. 1450 – 17 August 1510), minister of Henry VII, was a son of Peter Empson. Educated as a lawyer, he soon attained considerable success in his profession, and in 1491 was a Knight of the shire for Northamptonshire in Parliament, and Speaker of the House of Commons. Susan Baker Empson is an American scholar of mathematics education whose work includes longitudinal studies of children's mathematical development, the use of Cognitively Guided Instruction in mathematics education, analyses of childhood understanding of the concept of fractions, and research on the professional development of mathematics educators. Walter Empson (19 February 1856 – 14 June 1934) was a New Zealander teacher, headmaster and educationalist. Early life and family Empson was born in Eydon, Northamptonshire, England, on 19 February 1856. He was the eldest of the eight children of Anna Delicia Hook and her husband, Arthur John Empson, an Anglican clergyman. Education and career Empson was educated at Charterhouse before entering Trinity College, Oxford, where he gained a second-class honours degree, graduating in 1880. Weak eyesight had forced him to abandon his earlier intention of entering the army, and with no particular career in mind he sailed for New Zealand, probably in 1879. William Empson (1791 – 10 December 1852) was an English barrister, professor and journalist. William Empson was educated at Winchester, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was Professor at the East India Company's College from 1824 to 1852. He contributed regularly to the ''Edinburgh Review'' (1823–49) and was for some years its editor (1847–52). Life He was educated at Winchester School, where he was a schoolfellow of Thomas Arnold, and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He graduated B.A. 1812, and M.A. 1815.
