Emporia State Hornets Baseball
The Emporia State Hornets baseball team represents Emporia State University in NCAA Division II college baseball. The team participates in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The teams plays its home games on Glennen Field at Trusler Sports Complex, located just north of the Emporia State campus, and are coached by Brad Hill. History The second most successful era for ESU baseball was from 1974 to 1987, when the program was coached by former player Dave Bingham, who posted an overall record of 557–270–2 (), and won eight conference championships. From 1988 through the 2015 season, ESU's winning percentage increased to (943–530–1), and both Brian Embery and Bob Fornelli have a winning record with each having more than 450 wins. David Spafford
David Spafford (born c. 1965) is an American university sports administrator and eighth athletic director for Emporia State University, a NCAA Division II sports program in Emporia, Kansas. Previously, Spafford was the athletics director at Regis University, and before that, served as the assistant or associate athletics director for several college institutions. Biography Spafford was born in Belleville, Kansas, to Captain Gail Dean Spafford and Peggy Lorraine Slate. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1990 with a degree in political and social science, and also competed on the 1986 Kansas State Wildcats football team. Spafford is married to the former Bryanna Furman, with whom he shares six children with. NCAA Division II Baseball Championship
The NCAA Division II baseball tournament is an annual college baseball tournament held at the culmination of the spring regular season and which determines the NCAA Division II college baseball champion. Seth Wheeler (baseball)
Seth M. Wheeler (born January 17, 1992) is an American former college baseball coach and previously served as head coach at Emporia State University from 2019–2023. Prior to Emporia State, Wheeler served as an assistant coach focusing on pitchers at Emporia State, and served as the Junction City Brigade manager from 2015 to 2017. Robert William Fornelli (born August 9, 1966) is an American college baseball coach and current head baseball coach at Pittsburg State University. Previously, Fornelli coached at his alma mater Emporia State University from 2004 to 2018 where he guided the Hornets to five Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association regular season championships and two conference tournament championships, 13 trips to the NCAA Tournament, two World Series appearances and a national runner-up finish. Dave Bingham
David Bingham (born November 19, 1948) is a former college baseball coach. Bingham helped Emporia State to the NAIA World Series twice as a player. After playing briefly in as a shortstop in the Washington Senators system (hitting .174/.309/.207 in 34 games for the 1971 Geneva Senators), he was head coach at his alma mater, Kansas State Normal School/Emporia State from 1973 to 1987, going 557–270–2. From 1988 to 1995, he was at the University of Kansas, leading the Kansas Jayhawks baseball team to the 1993 College World Series while going 249–225 in eight seasons. In 2004, he was an assistant coach at the University of New Mexico for the baseball team and from August 2005 until 2011, he has been an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska for the baseball team.
