Empire Theatre, Adelaide
Grote Street is a major street running east to west in the western half of Adelaide city centre, in Adelaide, South Australia. It is on the northern border of Chinatown and the Adelaide Central Market, and is a lively centre for shopping and restaurants. The historic Her Majesty's Theatre is located here. New Empire Theatre
The New Empire Theatre was a historic theatre in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England. Built in 1896, it closed in 1998 and was demolished in 2017. History The New Empire Theatre was built in 1896 by theatre impresario Frederick Marlow. He had owned the public hall previously on the site, and converted it to The Empire Theatre in 1892. A fire on Boxing Day 1895 destroyed the building. Marlow took it upon himself to rebuild a bigger, better theatre, with five floors and electric lighting. The theatre was the first of its kind in Southend, and was called "the prettiest theatre outside of London" by local press at its opening in 1896. Marlow presented a varied programme of musicals, opera, concerts, plays, variety and music hall. He remained at the theatre until 1905 when it was taken over by the Southend-on-Sea Theatre Company Ltd. The Empire Theatre, also known as Wonderland and the Musee, was a theater located at the northeast corner of East Main Street and North Clinton Avenue in Rochester, New York from 1891 to 1904. It was a house of light entertainment, first as an exhibition space for curiosities and sensational presentations, later a vaudeville and burlesque house. Some of the earliest motion pictures shown in Rochester were presented there. The 1900 Plat Map of Rochester shows it as 234 East Main Street (not West Main street); a building 67 feet wide and 120 feet deep History M.S. Robinson leased a 4-story building (old Washington Hall) at East Main and Clinton in 1891, to be outfitted as Robinson's Musee Theater. It opened in September 1891. The Empire Theatre (originally the Eltinge Theatre) is a former Broadway theater at 234 West 42nd Street in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Opened in 1912, the theater was designed by Thomas W. Lamb for the Hungarian-born impresario A. H. Woods. It was originally named for female impersonator Julian Eltinge, a performer with whom Woods was associated. The theater was relocated about west of its original location in 1998. Since 2000, the original theater building has served as the entrance to the AMC Empire 25, a multiplex operated by AMC Theatres. The facade of the Empire Theatre is made of terracotta and is square in shape, with relatively little ornamentation. The Empire Theatre in New York City was a prominent Broadway theatre in the first half of the twentieth century. History The Empire Theatre opened in 1893 with a performance of ''The Girl I Left Behind Me'' by David Belasco. In February 1927 actress Gail Kane and others were arrested following a performance of '' The Captive'', which was considered indecent and a violation of Section 1140A of the New York City Criminal Code. The Empire continued to present both original plays and revivals, including the English premiere of ''The Threepenny Opera'' in 1933, until 1953. Its final show, ''The Time of the Cuckoo'', closed May 30, 1953 after 263 performances. In the same month, the theatre hosted a benefit celebrating the sixty-year history of the Empire. The Mainstreet Theater, also commonly referred to as The Empire Theater, is a historic theater in downtown Kansas City, Missouri in the Power & Light District. The theater was landmarked and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in February 2007. Empire Cinema, Blackpool
The Empire Cinema was a 1920s structure in Blackpool, Lancashire, in England, United Kingdom. It was built as a cinema and was used as such until 1959 when it became a nightclub, known as Casino. The Casino club hosted concerts by acts including the Beatles and Shirley Bassey. In 1974 it became a bingo hall and operated as such until 2020. The structure was locally listed but was demolished in 2021. Cinema The structure was constructed between 1928 and 1929 for Nottingham Cinemas Limited. It was designed by Lancashire architect Halstead Best. The structure, in Hawes Side Lane, had a proscenium width of and between 868 and 929 seats. The Sunderland Empire Theatre is a large theatre venue located in High Street West in Sunderland, North East England. Empire Theatre, Sydney
The Empire Theatre was a live music venue in Sydney for a few years before 1929 when it became a cinema. Around 1940 it had a dual role and by 1950 it was hosting various kinds of stage shows, increasingly musicals, and was finally destroyed by fire. History The theatre was designed by Kaberry and Chard, and built by R. P. Blundell as a music hall for a syndicate led by leading bookmaker Rafe Naylor. The site was a block on the Bijou Lane corner of Quay Street ("Saunders' Corner"), Railway Square, near the side entrance to Central Station. It opened on 1 May 1927 with the new Jerome Kern musical '' Sunny'', followed by ''The Student Prince''.
