Empire Statesmen Drum And Bugle Corps
The Empire Statesmen Drum and Bugle Corps was an all-age or senior drum corps based in Rochester, New York, United States. Founded in 1983, they were the only all-age corps to place in the top four of the DCA finals for 24 years straight (1988–2011), including five Drum Corps Associates Open Class World Champions, first place finishes in that same span. History The Empire Statesmen organization gave performances in over a dozen countries and on three continents. It was founded by the late Vincent Bruni. The Empire Statesmen Drum & Bugle Corps and the Empire Cadets were formerly known as The Little Americans. Many of the performers were from the Greater Rochester Area, located within the State of New York, and throughout the United States and Canada. Drum Corps Associates (DCA) is a governing body for modern all-age and senior drum and bugle corps in North America. DCA's responsibilities include sanctioning competitions, certifying adjudicators, maintaining and enforcing rules of competition, and hosting an annual World Championship during Labor Day weekend. Historically, DCA members were referred to as "senior corps" in contrast to the "junior corps", who limit participants to a maximum 22 years of age. DCA has no age restriction. The term "all-age corps" has come into common use. DCA is viewed as a counterpart to Drum Corps International (DCI), which governs junior drum corps in North America. The 2020 DCA World Championships were scheduled for , to be hosted by Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Drum Corps Associates Open Class World Champions
During Labor Day Weekend, Drum Corps Associates (DCA) Open Class corps compete to earn the title of DCA Open Class World Champion. The championships consist of 2 rounds (Prelims and Finals) held on 2 consecutive nights (the Saturday and Sunday nights of Labor Day weekend). All corps compete at Prelims, with the top 10 Open Class and top 4 Class A corps competing at Finals. The champion is determined by the overall high score in the Finals competition. There are also a number of ''caption'' awards (high brass, high percussion, high visual, etc.), though the process of determination for those awards has changed from year to year. The drum is a member of the percussion group of musical instruments. In the Hornbostel-Sachs classification system, it is a membranophone. Drums consist of at least one membrane, called a drumhead or drum skin, that is stretched over a shell and struck, either directly with the player's hands, or with a percussion mallet, to produce sound.
