Empire of the Sun are an Australian electronic music duo formed in 2007. The duo is a collaboration between Luke Steele, of alternative rock band The Sleepy Jackson, and Nick Littlemore, of electronic dance band Pnau. Empire of the Sun's 2008 debut album, ''Walking on a Dream'', brought the duo international success and has been certified double platinum in Australia and gold in the United Kingdom. The album provided a number of internationally charting singles including "Walking on a Dream", which peaked at number ten on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and reached number sixty four on the UK Singles Chart, and " We Are the People", which peaked at number fourteen on the UK Singles Chart. Luke Steele (musician)
Luke James Steele (born 13 December 1979) is an Australian musician, singer and songwriter. Steele is the vocalist and primary songwriter of the alternative rock band the Sleepy Jackson and is a member of the electronic music duo Empire of the Sun. Early life Steele was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on 13 December 1979.. He then moved to Perth, Western Australia. Luke attended Yokine Primary School and Mount Lawley Senior High School. Luke grew up in Jandakot with his sister Katy. Personal life Steele is a member of a musical family. His father, Rick, is a blues guitarist and harmonica player. Steele's sister, Katy, is the vocalist of Perth indie rock band Little Birdy. ''Walking on a Dream'' is the debut studio album by Australian electronic music duo Empire of the Sun, released on 3 October 2008 by Capitol Records. The album was produced by band members Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, along with Peter Mayes and Donnie Sloan. It was recorded and mixed by Peter Mayes at Soundworks Music Studio in Sydney at various times throughout 2007, with additional recording by Chris Vallejo at Linear Recording, also in Sydney. In 2010, the song “Half Mast” was sampled on rapper Mac Miller’s song “The Spins”, which was featured on his breakout mixtape '' K.I.D.S.''. Nicholas George Littlemore (born 6 May 1978) is an Australian musician, record producer, singer and songwriter. As a musician, he is the frontman of the electronic duo Pnau, an ex-member of the art-rock band Teenager (band), Teenager and one part of the electro pop-project Empire of the Sun (band), Empire of the Sun. As a record producer, he has worked with Elton John, Lover Lover, Groove Armada and Mika (singer), Mika. Teenager was an art rock, punk dance band formed in 2004 by Nick Littlemore as a side project from his electronic dance group Pnau, and Phillipa "Pip" Brown (later known as Ladyhawke) on guitar (ex-member of New Zealand band Two Lane Blacktop). In 2006 their debut single "Pony" was issued ahead of the album, ''Thirteen'', which was followed by a second single, "Bound and Gagged". Pnau ( ) is an Australian dance music trio originating from Sydney. The trio, a duo before 2016, consists of the musicians Nick Littlemore (vocals, production), Peter Mayes (guitar, production) and Sam Littlemore (production), with the latter joining in 2016. Pnau has achieved multiple successes with their award-winning 1999 first album ''Sambanova'' and the widely acclaimed 2007 release ''Pnau''.
