Empire Cricket Club
Empire Cricket Club is a cricket club in Barbados. The club plays in Barbados Cricket Association Division 1 championship. The club was formed on 24 May 1914—Empire Day—from which it took its name. The club was formed by a defection of disaffected members of Spartan Cricket Club, when Spartan had refused membership to the "socially inferior" Barbadian cricketer Herman Griffith in 1913. Racial and social prejudice in Barbados cricket precluded the club from play in the Barbados first division cricket competition by two turn downs, until 1916 when a casting vote secured entry into the competition after a 2-2 vote. Wanderers and Harrison College supporting their inclusion while Pickwick and Spartan opposed it. Griffith's ties to Combermere School created a link between Empire and the school, with many Combermere old boys playing for the club. Barbados Cricket Association
The Barbados Cricket Association is the ruling body for cricket in Barbados. The BCA was established in 1933 by an Act of Parliament to replace the Barbados Cricket Challenge Cup Committee, which had administered Barbadian cricket since its formation in 1892. The current president is Conde Riley. Of the seven teams which participate in the inaugural season in 1892, four are still competing today – Lodge, Harrison College, Pickwick and Wanderers. From this small beginning the cricket fraternity has grown to such an extent that there are now 128 teams representing 82 clubs participating in the BCA's competitions. The Barbados Cricket Association organizes cricket from the level of Under-13 Juniors to Test matches which it coordinates on behalf of the West Indies Cricket Board. Barbados
Barbados is an island country in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, in the Caribbean region of the Americas, and the most easterly of the Caribbean Islands. Empire Day
Commonwealth Day (formerly Empire Day) is the annual celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations, since 1977 often held on the second Monday in March. It is marked by an Anglican service in Westminster Abbey, normally attended by the monarch as Head of the Commonwealth along with the Commonwealth Secretary-General and Commonwealth High Commissioners in London. The King delivers a broadcast address to the Commonwealth. While it has a certain official status, Commonwealth Day is not a public holiday in most Commonwealth countries, and there is little public awareness of it. Spartan Cricket Club
Spartan Cricket Club is a cricket club in Barbados. Spartan was formed in 1893 as a club for middle-class black and creole cricketers who were denied entry into all-white cricket clubs such as Wanderers and Pickwick. The inaugural president of the club was Sir William Conrad Reeves, Chief Justice of Barbados and other members consisted mostly of "lawyers, medical practitioners, elite schoolmasters, higher level civil servants and the few non-whites to have penetrated the managerial levels of the business, commercial and plantation worlds." Herman Griffith
Herman Clarence Griffith (1 December 1893 – 18 March 1980) was a West Indian cricketer who played in West Indies' first Test match in their inaugural Test tour of England and was one of the leading bowlers on that tour. Griffith was born in Arima, Trinidad and Tobago. His first tour was to England in 1928. He took 11 wickets in the three Tests, the most of any West Indian bowler. England only gave up 30 wickets in the three Tests, as they won each by an innings. Griffith's best bowling of the tour, and his best in Test cricket, came in the final match at The Oval when he took six for 103, at one stage taking five for 21 as England collapsed from 301 for two to 333 for seven. Wanderers Cricket Club
Wanderers Cricket Club is a Barbadian cricket club. The club plays in the Barbados Cricket Association Elite Division, the highest division of domestic cricket in Barbados. A multi-sport club, Wanderers also possesses a masters football team and a hockey team. Club history Wanderers is the oldest existing cricket club in Barbados. Harrison College (Barbados)
Harrison College is a co-educational grammar school (secondary school) in Bridgetown, Barbados. Founded in 1733, the school takes its name from Thomas Harrison, a Bridgetown merchant, who intended it to serve as ''"A Public and Free School for the poor and indigent boys of the parish"''. Even in the nineteenth century it was recognised as perhaps the most prestigious secondary school in the British West Indies, attracting boys from neighbouring islands, including Pelham Warner who later went on to become the "Grand Old Man" of English cricket. Pickwick Cricket Club
Pickwick Cricket Club is a Barbados cricket club. The club was founded on 23 November 1882, the second oldest cricket club in Barbados after Wanderers Cricket Club. The club's home from its foundation until 2005 was Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, the main venue for matches involving the Barbados national cricket team and the Barbados venue for Test cricket involving the West Indies cricket team. The ground was built on land on Kensington Plantation leased by the club for a penny per annum. Pickwick club developed Kensington Oval into the finest ground in Barbados and it soon replaced the Wanderers Ground and the Garrison Savanna as the venue for inter-colonial matches. Combermere School
Combermere School is a school in Barbados, notable as one of the oldest schools in the Caribbean, established in 1695. Its alumni include several leading cricketers, David Thompson, sixth prime minister of Barbados and other politicians, several authors and the singer Rihanna. In its first 75 years, the school "provided the Barbadian community with the vast bulk of its business leaders and civil servants " and it is "perhaps the first school anywhere to offer secondary education to black children". Conrad Hunte
Sir Conrad Cleophas Hunte, KA (9 May 1932 – 3 December 1999) was a Barbadian cricketer. Hunte played 44 Test matches as an opening batsman for the West Indies. Early life and career Hunte was born in rural St Andrew Parish in the north of Barbados, the son of a sugar plantation worker. Hunte's family was poor; one of nine children, Hunte grew up in a one-room house. By the time Hunte was six-years-old he was playing cricket with the village boys, using an improvised bat made from palm fronds. Hunte's father was determined that Hunte would receive a good education and so Hunte was required to walk—barefoot—each day the three miles to Belleplaine Boys School. Everton Weekes
Sir Everton DeCourcy Weekes, KCMG, GCM, OBE (26 February 19251 July 2020) was a cricketer from Barbados. A right-handed batsman, he was known as one of the hardest hitters in world cricket. Weekes holds the record for consecutive Test hundreds, with five. Along with Frank Worrell and Clyde Walcott, he formed what was known as "The Three Ws" of the West Indies cricket team. Weekes played in 48 Test matches for the West Indies cricket team from 1948 to 1958. He continued to play first-class cricket until 1964, surpassing 12,000 first-class runs in his final innings. As a coach he was in charge of the Canadian team at the 1979 Cricket World Cup, and he was also a commentator and international match referee.
