Empanda
In ancient Roman religion, Empanda or Panda was a goddess, or possibly an epithet of Juno. Festus identifies her only as a ''dea paganorum'', "goddess of the rustics." Varro associates her with Ceres, and notes that there is a Roman gate named after her, the ''Porta Pandana''. A similarly named gate is mentioned in the Umbrian Iguvine Tablets (VIa 14): ''pertome Padellar''. Varro connects the word with ''pandere'', "to open," but also explains it by ''panem dare'', "to give bread," so that Empanda would be the goddess of bread or food. Modern scholarship associates the Latin Empanda with the Oscan Patanaí (in the dative singular), and the Umbrian ''Padellar'' (<*''Padenla:s'' < *''Patnla:s'' < *''Patnola:s''), with Latin ''-nd-'' regularly from ''*-tn-'', and Oscan regular vowel insertion to break up consonant clusters. An epithet (, ), also byname, is a descriptive term (word or phrase) known for accompanying or occurring in place of a name and having entered common usage. Juno ( ; Latin ) was an ancient Roman goddess, the protector and special counsellor of the state. She was equated to Hera, queen of the gods in Greek mythology. Sextus Pompeius Festus
Sextus Pompeius Festus, usually known simply as Festus, was a Roman grammarian who probably flourished in the later 2nd century AD, perhaps at Narbo (Narbonne) in Gaul. Work He made a 20-volume epitome of Verrius Flaccus's voluminous and encyclopedic treatise ''De verborum significatione''. Flaccus had been a celebrated grammarian who flourished in the reign of Augustus. Umbrian Language
Umbrian is an extinct Italic language formerly spoken by the Umbri in the ancient Italian region of Umbria. Within the Italic languages it is closely related to the Oscan group and is therefore associated with it in the group of Osco-Umbrian languages, a term generally replaced by Sabellic in modern scholarship. Iguvine Tablets
The Iguvine Tablets, also known as the Eugubian Tablets or Eugubine Tables, are a series of seven bronze tablets from ancient Iguvium (modern Gubbio), Italy, written in the ancient Italic language Umbrian. The earliest tablets, written in the native Umbrian alphabet, were probably produced in the 3rd century BC, and the latest, written in the Latin alphabet, from the 1st century BC. The tablets contain religious inscriptions that memorialize the acts and rites of the Atiedian Brethren, a group of 12 priests of Jupiter with important municipal functions at Iguvium. Marcus Terentius Varro
Marcus Terentius Varro (; 116–27 BC) was a Roman polymath and a prolific author. He is regarded as ancient Rome's greatest scholar, and was described by Petrarch as "the third great light of Rome" (after Vergil and Cicero). He is sometimes called Varro Reatinus to distinguish him from his younger contemporary Varro Atacinus. Arnobius
Arnobius (died c. 330) was an early Christian apologist of Berber origin during the reign of Diocletian (284–305). According to Jerome's ''Chronicle,'' Arnobius, before his conversion, was a distinguished Numidian rhetorician at Sicca Veneria (El Kef, Tunisia), a major Christian center in Proconsular Africa, and owed his conversion to a premonitory dream. Arnobius writes dismissively of dreams in his surviving book, so perhaps Jerome was projecting his own respect for the content of dreams. Capitoline Hill
The Capitolium or Capitoline Hill ( ; it, Campidoglio ; la, Mons Capitolinus ), between the Forum and the Campus Martius, is one of the Seven Hills of Rome. Porta Pandana
The Porta Pandana (also known as the ''Porta Saturnia'') was an ancient Roman gateway in the original fortifications of the Capitoline Hill. According to Festus, this gate was the one through which Tarpeia allowed the Sabines to enter the city of Rome. In a treaty signed between Romans and the Sabines, this gate was stipulated to remain open. Other ancient authors who mentioned this gate included Polyaenus, who described the Gauls utilising it during their sack of Rome in 390 BCE, while Dionysius of Halicarnassus mentions this gate during the assault of Appius Herdonius on the Capitol, but mistakenly referred to it as the Porta Carmentalis.
