Emmie Te Nijenhuis
Emmie te Nijenhuis (born 11 November 1931) is a Dutch ethnomusicologist of the music of India. She was an associate professor of Indian musicology at Utrecht University between 1964 and 1988. Life Te Nijenhuis was born in Bussum on 11 November 1931. She studied classical piano at the Utrechts Conservatorium from 1951 to 1955. From 1951 to 1964 she concurrently studied Western musicology, Sanskrit and Indian musicology at Utrecht University. From 1964 to 1988 she was an associate professor of Indian musicology at the same institute. She obtained her PhD at Utrecht University under Jan Gonda in 1970. After retiring in 1988 she founded a private music school in 1991. She contributed to the German-language music encyclopedia ''Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart'', writing the entry on . Ethnomusicology
Ethnomusicology is the study of music from the cultural and social aspects of the people who make it. It encompasses distinct theoretical and methodical approaches that emphasize cultural, social, material, cognitive, biological, and other dimensions or contexts of musical behavior, in addition to the sound component. Within musical ethnography it is the first-hand personal study of musicking as known as the act of taking part in a musical performance. Folklorists, who began preserving and studying folklore music in Europe and the US in the 19th century, are considered the precursors of the field prior to the Second World War. Bussum
Bussum () is a commuter town and former municipality in the Gooi region in the south east of the province of North Holland in the Netherlands near Hilversum. Since 2016, Bussum has been part of the new municipality of Gooise Meren. Bussum had a population of 33,595 in 2019 and covered an area of . History For a long time Bussum was not more than a hamlet situated amongst the heathlands of the Gooi and was first mentioned in 1306. In this time, Bussum was a large heathland with many small farms, sheep pens and forests as is shown on old maps. Since Bussum is situated near the fortified town Naarden it was governed by Naarden from 1369 onward. In 1470 Bussum was inhabited by about 250 people, which made it the smallest village in the Gooi. Utrechts Conservatorium
The Utrechts Conservatorium is a Conservatory of Music in Utrecht, Netherlands and part of the ''Utrecht School of the Arts'' (HKU). The conservatory opened in 1875 and is one of the eldest professional musical education institutes of the Netherlands. Since 1971, the conservatory is located in the former concert hall ''Gebouw voor Kunsten en Wetenschappen'' (Building for Arts and Science) and in the former hospital ''St. Joannes de Deo'', both on the same street. Apart from these two buildings, the ''Nederlandse Beiaardschool'' ( Dutch Carillon School), located in Amersfoort, is also part of the school. Jan Gonda
Jan Gonda (14 April 1905 – 28 July 1991) was a Dutch Indologist and the first Utrecht professor of Sanskrit. He was born in Gouda, in the Netherlands, and died in Utrecht. He studied with Willem Caland at Rijksuniversiteit, Utrecht (since 1990 Universiteit Utrecht) and from 1932 held positions at Utrecht and Leiden. He held the positions of Chair of Sanskrit succeeding Caland from 1929, as well as of Indology from 1932. He published scholarly articles on Indian Sanskrit and Indonesian Javanese texts for sixty years. In 1952, he published his monumental work on ''Sanskrit in Indonesia''. His contributions to philology and Vedic literature has been oft-cited. Gonda is recognized as one of the twentieth century's leading scholars of Asian language, literature and religion, particularly on texts and topics related to Hinduism and Buddhism.
