Emily Maguire (writer)
Emily Maguire (born 1976) is an Australian novelist and journalist. Early life and education Maguire was born in Canberra in 1976. She grew up in the western suburbs of Sydney in a church-going family, but she now describes herself as an atheist. Maguire married in her early twenties to Jeff Maguire, whom she had known since the age of 14, over the initial objections of her family. She has an MA in literature. She became a professional writer in her mid twenties after working for the NRMA and Telstra. Writing Maguire's articles and essays on sex, religion and culture have been published in newspapers and journals including ''The Sydney Morning Herald'', ''The Australian Financial Review'', ''The Age'' and ''The Observer''. In 2007, the Women's Electoral Lobby awarded her the Edna Ryan Award (Media Category) for her writing about women's issues. Ned Kelly Awards
The Ned Kelly Awards (named for bushranger Ned Kelly) are Australia's leading literary awards for crime writing in both the crime fiction and true crime genres. They were established in 1996 by the Crime Writers Association of Australia to reward excellence in the field of crime writing within Australia. The genre of crime writing has long been popular, but it was not until the early 1990s that a local growth of writing within the genre occurred in Australia. By the middle of the decade support for the field had grown sufficiently that it was decided to establish the Ned Kelly Awards. A novelist is an author or writer of novels, though often novelists also write in other genres of both fiction and non-fiction. Some novelists are professional novelists, thus make a living writing novels and other fiction, while others aspire to support themselves in this way or write as an avocation. Kathleen Mitchell Award
The Kathleen Mitchell Award is a bi-annual Australian literature prize for young authors. It was established in 1996 and is awarded every second year with prize money originally being A$5000, by 2012 that amount had grown to A$ 15,000 and in 2014 it increased to A$ 20,000. After not being awarded in 2016 it was awarded again in 2019 with a prize money of A$ 15,000. The prize was established in the will of Kathleen Mitchell with the following aim: ''"the advancement, improvement and betterment of Australian literature, to improve the educational style of the authors, and to provide them with additional amounts and thus enable them to improve their literary efforts"''. The 1st century was the century spanning AD 1 ( I) through AD 100 ( C) according to the Julian calendar. Catherine Jane Caro (born 24 June 1957) is a feminist social commentator, writer and lecturer based in Australia. Early life and education Caro was born in London in 1957 and emigrated to Australia with her parents as a five-year-old in 1963. She attended Macquarie University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English literature in 1977. Working life Caro started her career in marketing, however soon moved into advertising. Caro has appeared on Channel Seven's ''Sunrise'', ABC television's ''Q&A'' and as a regular panellist on ''The Gruen Transfer''. Caro has worked in the advertising industry and lectures in advertising at the School of Humanities and Communication Arts at University of Western Sydney. The Miles Franklin Literary Award is an annual literary prize awarded to "a novel which is of the highest literary merit and presents Australian life in any of its phases". The award was set up according to the will of Miles Franklin (1879–1954), who is best known for writing the Australian classic ''My Brilliant Career'' (1901). She bequeathed her estate to fund this award.
