Emilio Nicolas, Sr.
Emilio Nicolas Sr. (27 October 1930 – 12 October 2019) was an American businessman credited with helping to create one of the earliest Spanish-language television stations in the United States. Nicolas established KWEX-DT, KWEX-TV in San Antonio, which became the cornerstone of the network that would later become Univision. Life and career Born in Frontera Municipality, Frontera, Coahuila, Mexico in 1930, Nicolas initially came to the United States to learn English and attended St. Mary's University, Texas, St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry with a minor in math. He went on to earn a master's degree at Trinity University (Texas), Trinity University in San Antonio in 1952 before going to work for the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research as a researcher on arteriosclerosis and the polio vaccine.
