Emilio Correa (boxer Born 1953)
Emilio Correa (born May 21, 1953) is a Cuban former amateur boxer who won welterweight gold at the Olympics 1972. He is not to be confused with his middleweight namesake, who is actually his son. Inspired by his compatriots Roberto Caminero "Chocolatico" Pérez, Enrique Regüeiferos, Félix Betancourt and Rolando Garbey who also hail from Santiago de Cuba, he started boxing in 1966. At the PanAm Games in Cali, Colombia (1971) he won gold against American Larry Carlisle, but it was not until he beat Betancourt at the national championships in 1972 that he was able to secure his ticket to the Olympics. Welterweight is a weight class in combat sports. Originally the term "welterweight" was used only in boxing, but other combat sports like Muay Thai, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts also use it for their own weight division system to classify the opponents. In most sports that use it, welterweight is heavier than lightweight but lighter than middleweight. Günther Meier
Günther Meier (July 26, 1941 – November 23, 2020) was a German amateur boxer who competed in the Light Middleweight (71 kg) category. He won an Olympic bronze medal in 1968. Meier also competed as a welterweight at the 1972 Munich Olympics where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Pedro Gamarro
Pedro Gamarro (January 8, 1955 – May 7, 2019) was a Venezuelan amateur boxer. Gamarro represented his native country at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. There, he won the silver medal in the welterweight division (– 67 kg) after having lost to Jochen Bachfeld of East Germany in the final. Gamarro's medal was the only one won by the South American nation in Montreal. A year earlier, Gamarro had won a bronze medal at the 1975 Pan American Games.
