Emilio Bacardi
Emilio Bacardi Moreau (1844–1922) was a Cuban industrialist, politician, and writer who managed the Bacardi Rum Company and served as the first democratically elected as mayor of Santiago. Biography Emilio was the son of Don Facundo Bacardi Massó and his wife Lucía ‘Amalia’ Victoria Moreau, a woman from a very prosperous family of Franco-Haitian descent. His father was a businessman who in 1862 founded the Bacardi rum company that would grow into today's international corporation, Bacardi Limited. However, before finding stability in the rum business, Facundo and his young family experienced hardships in Cuba. For instance, in 1852 a major earthquake struck Santiago and the family briefly returned to Don Facundo's homeland of Spain to escape the ensuing epidemics of cholera (epidemics which claimed some of Emilio's siblings). Leonard Wood
Leonard Wood (October 9, 1860 – August 7, 1927) was a United States Army major general, physician, and public official. He served as the Chief of Staff of the United States Army, Military Governor of Cuba, and Governor-General of the Philippines. He began his military career as an army doctor on the frontier, where he received the Medal of Honor. During the Spanish–American War, he commanded the Rough Riders, with Theodore Roosevelt as his second-in-command. Wood was bypassed for a major command in World War I, but then became a prominent Republican Party leader and a leading candidate for the 1920 presidential nomination. Born in Winchester, New Hampshire, Wood became an army surgeon after earning a Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard Medical School.
