The Embassy of the Philippines in Rome is the diplomatic mission of the Republic of the Philippines to the Italian Republic. First opened in 1947, it is currently located along the Via Aurelia in the quarter (''quartiere'') of Aurelio, part of Municipio XIII in western Rome, just west of Vatican City. History Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Italy were established on July 9, 1947, around a year after the Philippines obtained full independence from the United States. A legation was established a year later on July 5, 1948, and in 1951, President Elpidio Quirino signed Executive Order No. 397, reorganizing the Philippines' diplomatic presence in Europe and placing the legation under the jurisdiction of the Philippine Embassy in Madrid. José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (, ; June 19, 1861 – December 30, 1896) was a Filipino nationalist, writer and polymath active at the end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. He is considered the national hero (''pambansang bayani'') of the Philippines. An ophthalmologist by profession, Rizal became a writer and a key member of the Filipino Propaganda Movement, which advocated political reforms for the colony under Spain. Balduina is an urban area that belongs to the Municipio XIX of the comune of Rome, Italy, and to the fourteenth borough of the city, (Q.XIV, called Trionfale). The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) is a missionary religious congregation in the Catholic Church.
