The Embassy of Sweden in Mexico City is Sweden's diplomatic mission in Mexico. The mission of the embassy is to represent Swedish interests in Mexico, as well as to strengthen bilateral relations within the governmental, commercial, business, academic, cultural and civil society spheres, with a particular emphasis on cooperation for sustainable development. History Sweden and Mexico have had diplomatic relations since 1850. In 1913 a position as '' chargé d'affaires'' was established in Mexico. In the 1940s, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and El Salvador belonged to the legation's area of operation. The legation consisted during this time of an envoy and a first clerk. In 1956, the Swedish legation was elevated to embassy and envoy Lennart Nylander now became ambassador instead. In November 1995, the Swedish embassy was occupied by 23 Mexican sanitation workers. A chancery is the principal office that houses a diplomatic mission or an embassy. This often includes the associated building and the site. The building can house one or several different nations' missions. The term derives from chancery or chancellery, the office of a chancellor. Some nations title the head of foreign affairs a chancellor, and 'chancery' eventually became a common referent to the main building of an embassy. The building of a chancery is often erroneously referred to as an embassy. The term technically refers to the ambassador's residence and not their office. Among diplomats the terms "embassy residence" and "embassy office" is used to distinguish between the ambassador's residence and the chancery. Nils Erik Wilhelm Af Wetterstedt
Baron Nils Erik Wilhelm af Wetterstedt (November 8, 1815 – January 1, 1887) was a Swedish diplomat and translator of opera libretti. In his early career he worked in the Swedish Foreign Office and had diplomatic posts in Vienna, Berlin, the Hague and Copenhagen. In 1857 he was appointed Swedish-Norwegian envoy to the United States.
