Embassy Of South Africa In Washington
The South African Embassy in Washington, D.C. is the diplomatic mission of the Republic of South Africa to the United States. It is located at 3051 Massachusetts Avenue, Northwest, Washington, D.C. in the Embassy Row neighborhood. History South Africa sent its first delegation to the United States in 1929. In 1949 it was raised to a formal embassy. The embassy buildings were built in 1936. Previously the delegation had been housed in a series of leased properties. The original portion now serves as the ambassadorial residence and a new chancery wing was built next door in 1964. Both structures are in the Cape Dutch style, but with Indiana limestone instead of the traditional whitewashed plaster. The complex is no longer large enough to house the entire ambassadorial delegation service, and is being renovated. A diplomatic mission or foreign mission is a group of people from a state or organization present in another state to represent the sending state or organization officially in the receiving or host state. In practice, the phrase usually denotes an embassy, which is the main office of a country's diplomatic representatives to another country; it is usually, but not necessarily, based in the receiving state's capital city. Embassy Row is the informal name for a section of Northwest Washington, D.C. with a high concentration of embassies, diplomatic missions, and diplomatic residences. It spans Massachusetts Avenue N.W. between 18th and 35th street, bounded by Scott Circle to the south and the United States Naval Observatory to the north; the term is often applied to nearby streets and neighborhoods that also host diplomatic buildings, such as Kalorama. Cape Dutch Style
Cape Dutch architecture is an architectural style found mostly in the Western Cape of South Africa, but modern examples of the style have also been exported as far afield as Western Australia and New Zealand, typically on wine estates. The style was prominent in the early days (17th century) of the Cape Colony, and the name derives from the initial settlers of the Cape being primarily Dutch. The style has roots in medieval Netherlands, Germany, France and Indonesia. Architectural features Houses in this style have a distinctive and recognizable design, with a prominent feature being the grand, ornately rounded clock gables, reminiscent of features in townhouses of Amsterdam built in the Dutch style.
