Embarras River Bridge
The Embarras River Bridge is a bridge in Jasper County, Illinois, which carries Wade Township Road 164 across the Embarras River. The south end of the bridge is in the city of Newton, while the northern end is in Wade Township. The Pratt through truss bridge was built in 1890 by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company to replace a derelict wooden bridge. At in length, the bridge is relatively long for a Pratt truss bridge. The bridge is the only Pratt through truss bridge in the county and is one of the oldest truss bridges of any type in the state. Newton is a city in and the county seat of Jasper County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,849 at the 2010 census, down from 3,069 at the 2000 census. Newton is home to a large coal-fired power plant operated by Illinois Power Generating Co and is close to Newton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area and Sam Parr State Fish and Wildlife Area. Jasper County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 9,698. Its county seat is Newton. History Jasper County was formed in 1831 out of Clay and Crawford Counties. It was named for Sgt. William Jasper, a Revolutionary War hero from South Carolina.
